I've done this before but have forgotten how.

I'm currently having to close every window I've opened after navigating to files and folders.

Anyone remember where to reset this.

If it is what I think you mean, open a new window, go to

View> Options >

and select open "Browse Folders Using a single Window"

Holding down shift and clicking on the close window button of the most recently opened window closes them all if that helps.
