Its about time I gave linux a shot... I've been wanting to for ages and now someone just gave me a P2 233 with a 2.5 gig HD in it..

Firstly will the newer versions of linux run on such a slow system ??

I can download all flavors of linux for free ... Which is best for a complete novice ?

How hard is it to install and is there any good resource sites I should know about for getting drivers and such ?

TIA

A system that old should not need drivers if you are using the current version of the O/S.

The latest version will run on that system (a tad slowly though)

I would recommend Mandrake for anyone as it is easy to install/use and also very advanced if you want that.

Congrats on your new system (a free system is good indeed).

Looks like the perfect server box system. Linux will run on it (heck, linux will run on a 386). I've been using SuSE for a couple years now but I have always found RedHat the superior choice for novice *nux users (Although Mandrake > 6.0 is geared toward the new user as well). As far as resources are concerned, a good ole fashion "Google" search should steer you in the right direction.

Good luck

Arc Ryebac - Hi - have you tried playing with Suse 8.0, this is claimed to be very user friendly but I can't make a personal comment as it is still being downloaded.

Why doesn't Suse release ISOs? No not Eval ISOs proper ISOs

You may want to check this site, maybe it helps. It helped me when I started using Mandrake Linux a year ago.
