Ive seen a tempting offer here (http://www.netsystem.com/eng/y_satadsl350_eng.asp?i=y350pci) works out at £183 for 14 months rental and a free modem

Does anyone have any experience with satellite boardband, i understand that is no good for gaming but streaming video and downloading is fast.

Normal boardband is not a possibility for a few years with those gits BT

Thanks

Deano

Seems very good indeed. :)

I am tempted but I keep thinking that there *must* be a catch somewhere. It seems to good to be true IMHO. You need to have a Sat dish already installed and it must be pointed at Astra 19.2 east (Is that the location of Sky? )

Moving this to Consumers forum, anybody know anything else about this? Seems they even supply the PCI card free as well and you can receive 100's of FREE TV channels via Astra, I hope there is no catch. :D

I had sat internet for a while with a company called starspeeder(gone out of business), it is good for surfing and streaming media and downloading but thats it, as you say forget about it for gaming, the pings are just too high.

I would say first thing to check is how much they will let you download in a month, I have been looking for sat provider for awhile, and all the ones i checked out say you can only downlaod I tiny 1mb a month, which total destroys the whole point of have a fast connection. I have looked the athe above but have not seen any capping. best email them and find out

Its unlimited :) no catches either as far as i can see, off to me dads tomorrow has has an old Sky analogue dish and lnb so if these are ok i will put it up on the wall and order it.

Even if after the 2 month trial if you cancell you can sell the DVB card/modem on Ebay where they are fetching around £50-£70 and all its cost is £24 !

Ive found this forum as well www.netsystemusers.com loads of info on there.

Ive just signed up, i decided not to pay a year up front just in case they go bust !

Anyway they are taking 1 payment of 36euro which covers the card and 2 months subsciption, then in month 3 a payment of 36euro (first 4 months are half price!)

The offer ends end of August, so dont hang around you really cant loose,
if its crap sell the card and make some profit, if its good then stay subscribed !

You can either put it up yourself or get your local tv man to do it, ive just put the dish up myself so im ringing round for quotes to get it lined up correctly.

Will do Topmovies2002

I'm really interested coz BT won't be upgrading my exchange for decades.
Any chance of feed back before deadline of 31/08?
btw have a search on ebay under satellite, you'll find several satellite finder kits for diy tuning from £10 - £35, maybe cheaper than paying local aerial fitter.

Right im up and running, i ordeed the card on Thursday and it arrived Tuesday very quick seing as there was a weekend and bank hol inbetween.

Anyway had a go lining up the dish myself useless rang round for some quote between £40 & £70 to line up  but managed to find someone who did it for £15

Im getting dpwnload speeds between 15kb and 25kb at the moment but it is peak time.

The problem with satellite in North America is that if you use it too much (use too much bandwidth downloading stuff) They put you down to 56k speeds. Not fun, I'm not sure if the european companies would do that too.

why didnt i find this post a few days ago??im gutted missed the offer buts its only for free delivery i think, not the end of the world :-) anyway i wanted to know deano if u still think that it is worth me getting? i noticed that you havent responded since u thought it was good at peak times. Sat internet connection is the only way i can get broadband as i live out in the sticks, middle of nowhere and they have no plans for cable its poo. Anyway if you can let me know how ur gettin on with it cos it sounds really good!

No. The old Sky analogue dishes were pointing at 19.2 deg east. Sky Digital is at 28.2 deg east.

Sorry been on holiday in Devon and just got back .

I havent had time to use it fully yet as i went on holiday the day i installed it, it seems to be working quite fast but no where as fast as it should be.

Text pages dont seem much faster but sites with loads of pictures (porn  he he) are fast.

Downloading in general is very good much much better than a 56k anyway, was downloading 1mb in about 1min

Dont think you can use a sky digi dish as they are too small, you can use a 80cm dish i have a 60cm old sky analogue dish with a universal 0.7db lnb.

Read my post m8.

You can't use a sky digi dish because it is pointing in the wrong direction!!!

What i mean is that if you wanted to use say an old sky digi dish it would be no good, i think if you get a 80cm dish and put a twin lnb you can get sky digi and internet a few people have done this but depends where you live in the UK i think.

www.netsystemusers.com have a look there for info the forums are good.

See what you mean now!!!

Yes that is posible but you have to have the dish pointing at 28.2 deg east and use the twin lnb bracket so the offset lnb is pointing at Astra 19.2 deg east. It does need an 80cm dish or bigger the further north you go.

I've been looking into sat broadband aswell and found there are two types: one way and two way.

One way =

YOU >----- normal 56k dial up ISP -------> THE INTERNET
| |
| <------------------- satellite ----------------------< |

Two way =

YOU <-------------- satellite -----------------> THE INTERNET

Therefore, one way still needs your normal 56k modem and ISP account and all upstream goes via that. Its only downloads that go via the satellite and are faster.

Two way is exactly that, both ways are faster similar to cable I think much faster downloads but decreased speed uploads eg 512 K down by 128 K up.

Both are obviously better than normal 56k but its important to understand which kind you are looking at (a mistake I made at first). I admit I haven't looked into it for a huge amount of time so I may be wrong.

One place I've been looking at is bridgebroadband.co.uk

For around £250 a month you can get 640 K downloads and 128 K uploads.

Comparison (mixture of one and two way): http://207.228.234.38/uk/satellite/satellite.asp

<edit> The top picture hasn't quite worked but you get the idea :) </edit>

How was he getting crap ?

And people only get this because boardband is not available in most places yet.

Ive been getting about 40kb/sec downloads which is bloody fast compared to 4-5 kb/sec with dial up.

is the connection stable? cos i was reading some forums and they were all complaining that the service is always down and that download speeds are always really slow??

deanos
Sep 19, 2002, 10:08 AM
Yes the service does vary the minimum i have been getting is 20 kb/sec but as much as 45 kb/sec.

The past week they have been doing some tweaking and i have been getting 30 kb/sec minimum.

Have a look at www.netsystemusers.com forum for info as there is a speed test where people leave the speeds they have been getting.
