Purple Donkey Aug 20, 2002, 07:01 AM Hi,
I am new to car audio & was hoping u could help me out on suggesting a system for my VL Commodore '87 Seden.
I was hoping to get something that will pack a punch in the bass department as i mostly listen to dance music..sumthin along the lines of :
Deck = Cd Player with bass, treble adjuster etc..
Amp
Subwoofer
2x 6x9's in the bak and maybe in front ??
Mainly want for high BASS, dancey music.
Willing to spend up to maximum of $600.(AUD)
could u Recommend a system setup for me ?
thanks
bounty_killa Aug 20, 2002, 01:54 PM golden rule when fitting a subwoofer in the back is never fit any other speakers in the back as its a waste of time, just get a good quality component kit for the front.
if u want real punch you gonna need 2 subs at least
dont know about american prices but a good setup includes
single deck cd player, although would recommend headunit and a cd changer if u got enough,or better still one that plays mp3s
800 watt amp bridged
2 x 12" subs in a box
front component kit consisting of door speakers and tweeters
so price for that would be
headunit =£99 or £180 for a mp3 player or £200 for head unit and cd changer
amp and bass box with subs =£250
component kit £70
total =around £420 which is under your $600 limit
hope this helps, could of helped u better if u was in uk and point u in right direction, but good luck and turn that music down :)
green_blade Aug 20, 2002, 03:48 PM Youd be better off in the consumer forum with this one (CoOp).
Purple Donkey Aug 21, 2002, 03:09 AM Cool, thanks heaps bounty_killa !!
Is that True is it ? bout Not mixn Subs & Speakers in the bak, Yeh i guess the Bass would just overlap any sound cum'n out huh..Thanks for the advice.
Do u think it would be alright with just 1 12inch in the bak (in a box) ?
And when u say component kit, Is that just like Front speakers and wires & stuff? soz, new to all this..
Thanks HEAPS MAN !
ElaineM Aug 21, 2002, 03:15 AM I'm going to move this to the Consumer's Opinion forum for you. However beware that it is a bit off topic since it doesn't exactly have to do with computers so... :)
DNRC Aug 21, 2002, 07:33 AM By component Kit, he means seperate speakers, one for bass+middle and a seperate tweeter.
bounty_killa Aug 21, 2002, 11:17 AM yeah thats a component kit, will make a big difference, and never put the speakers at the back always at the front.as for the one sub if u really want a good bass line u gonna have to go for 2 ,i started with one 12" its ok but if u want the next street to feel the bass get 2:),also when buying the power cables for your amp get one with an inline fuse as u dont want no fire in the boot now do ya?.last thing get it installed by a pro if u have any slightest doubt as amps are easily burnt out l8r
rudey Aug 21, 2002, 01:00 PM rockforde fosgate amps plus subs :) should blow out your glass and your neighbours too :) , you want 15 inch cones
ish Aug 21, 2002, 05:44 PM a 15" sub won't really any good for dance music
stick to 10" or 12" subs for dance music
littlejack Aug 21, 2002, 06:06 PM i got 2 12" in my boot, and 2 6x9 on the rear shelf - sounds great, why would you say don't do it?
bigsyd Aug 22, 2002, 05:22 PM a 15" sub won't really any good for dance music
stick to 10" or 12" subs for dance music
yup 10 or 12 for dance, fast and tight bass 15+ looooow bass
how loud can it go???? it's off or on fullllll
DNRC Aug 23, 2002, 07:46 AM Littlejack, the reasoning for not really needing a set of speaker and a sub in the back is really because it is not really needed.
This is due to the fact that the human ear cannot properly determine where bass is coming from so it makes no difference where the sub is. However, we can hear where middle and treble is coming from. In the proposed scenario, the component speakers are in the front, right by the driver where they can get good quality middle and treble, and the bass comes from the back.
But, as with all audio, it is a case of personal preference, so do whatever sounds best to you.
BlackOut Aug 24, 2002, 09:45 PM First of all, I'd get a nice amp, like a Rockford with high watts like 800. Then i'd get 2 12's with a nice box. 2 12's make your whole car shake. The wires and caps are gonna cost u $200 cuz u gotta make sure u get the good stuff or you'll mess up your system. I got a sony xplod 800 watt amp, with 2 rockford 12's in a clear plastic face box. I got a rockford cap and wires so i know they wont burn.
AdioKIP Aug 26, 2002, 07:33 PM Ok just my opinion here but you would be just fine with a smaller amp. I would recommend first going to Circuit City or Best Buy for the subs. Circuit City has a weekly sale of buy one sub get one free and they alternate brand each week so just wait till the week there doing it on the subs you want and you can get 2 12's for about $100. Figure another $50 for your box. Personally I got an amp that people consider cheap but to me it packs one hell of a punch. I have a Jensen 400 watt 4 channel amp thats bridged. Right now the amp is only turned up half way and I can easily set off car alarms and let the whole campus know when I'm coming. (Unfortunately it lets cops know as well.....damn disturbing the peace tickets). You can get this amp for about $150 so figure about $300 for speakers, box, amp. Next lets look at headunits. I would skip getting a changer and get a deck that does MP3's. Make sure it does folders and reads the ID tags. Kenwood and JVC both have good decks out that you can get for about $200-$300. As far as 6x9's, before worrying about them to go in the back I would worry more about having good speakers in the front since the subs in the back will drown out whatever else you have in back. Putting 2 good door speakers in and some tweeters would be a much wiser investment. Figure about $100 for that. Where up to the $600 total but the only thing left is the wires. When they said the wires will be a few hundred this is ONLY if you plan on running a high powered amp. If you run a 400 watt amp like I do you dont need the most expensive wires out. But anyways this is just how I would set up a system on a budget. Like I said even with 400 watts you will still here 2 12's comin.
