Can anyone find a guide that tells me how to convert svcd to dvd-r?
tried searching but it has been disabled.
Does it increase quality?
thanks

no it won't increase quality. you can't make something better than the source. i.e. take a mp3 encoded at 96kbs, then rencode it to 320kbs. it's still going to be the same 96kbs sound, it'll just be a bigger file size.
at this point really the only way to do svcd ->dvd is convert it. you need to change the resolution from 480x480/576 to 720x480/576. and change the audio from 44.1 to 48khz. IMHO it's not worth it.
There are methods that you can do it without changing the video, you can make an xdvd. But they won't be dvd comliant and might not play in all players. you basically fool the authoring program into thinking it's a dvd compliant mpg. Here's a link on how to do it. http://www.vcdhelp.com/convert.htm#dvd

How comes when i converted divx(source) to vcd the picture was shabby and sound rusty, but when i converted to svcd it was way better and around the source type.
Also do i have to convert to watch it from a dvdr?

or in your opion what is the best way of watching svcd/vcd/divx from a dvd-r(as it holds more space) and keep alot of the picture quality and sound?

well it probably was better, because of the origonal bit rate. vcd 2.0 has a constant bit rate of 1150, where as svcd is typically avg max under 2530. since your divx file probably came from dvd (bit rate upto 9k), it was probably higher than 1150 (think divx is usually around 1500-1800). So the svcd would look better than vcd. =)
as far as my opinion of getting movies on dvd-r. all depends what you want to do with them. i.e. if they're just going to be for personal use, then i'd go ahead and do the mpg header change and not do the reencoding (provided it plays on your dvd player ;) ). but if you plan to share the discs, i probably wouldn't do it.....you should probably check www.vcdhelp.com 's forums, you may find a better solution there. I don't have a dvd burner, so I haven't been able to do any testing myself.
post back on what you find works best for you. I'm curious to see other peoples methods, ideas. I'm going to have to figure something out soon enough (when i finally break down and spend the $300 for the burner), I'm contemplating whether or not to transfer my 500+ movie collection to dvd-r, or start over fresh.

1 point i forgot to mention: Dvd does support vcd 2.0. so you don't have to rencode the video if you want to put a bunch of vcd movies on dvd. you can store 450min on 1 dvd, in vcd format. 2 things about it though you can only have PAL and NTSC framerates, not NTSCfilm, and you'll still have to convert the audio to 48khz. Here's a link on how to do it.
