Guys need some help: I have an old pc which the family uses for internet and office stuff (word excel etc)- its a 4-5 yr old dell dimension PII 333mhz.
with 64 mb ram running Win 95

a) i'm wondering if i can add some extra ram onto the board but not sure if the board will accept the bog standard sdram sold nowadays

b) assuming i can take the ram upto 256mb what operating system do you think i can run on the machine if i don't touch anything else on the board- i guess win2000 or xp would be very slow on the machine?

best to try find the motherboard manual to check out what type of ram to get, alternately you can download a programme called sandra and that will tell you everything you need to know. Search google for sandra as I have forgot the link.
I would think that you might only be able to upgrade to 128 RAM but uou might get it up to 256.
As for an OS I would say just go for win 98 that will prob be your best bet

256 ram and a PII 333 processor will run 2000 or XP fine.

If the PC slow you could try putting a newer Harddrive because i know that on my old pc of that age the harddrive was hella slow.

I agree about getting a new hardrive. Then do a clean install with win 98. Also upgrading you RAM to 256 will help speed problems alot. However, I doubt that you board will take sdram so you may need EDO ram insted.

If you can put 256MB RAM and a new HD (at least 20GB) then go for WinXP.
