I ordered a Magic 2 chip from modchip.ca(still havent recevied it) and I have a 30001-R v4.

First:

The installation diagrams on modchip.ca and china-magic.com are lacking. It doesnt really show what points need to be soldered to where.

Second:

What type of soldering iron, solder, tip and all of this will I need? I have found various answers, and would like a definitive answer if possible.

Third:

Before you go flaming me on how I might mess up my ps2, my cousin has his electronics degree and has done a lot of soldering, and he will help me with it. I just need to get all of the supplies/diagrams and so forth.

Fourth:

Where is the chip mounted once it is soldered? I dont think it will just sit on top of the motherboard, so Im thinking there has to be a better way...

Thank you for you help in advance, I really appreciate it.

PS: I saw the clip for my modchip on modchip.ca, but didnt buy it. Would like to know if this will save me a lot of time effort, and an explanation of how it works.

I don't wanna sound like im flaming, but if he has the electronics degree, let him do it, not him helping you.

If you never soldered before, the Magic2 chip is not a good place to start.

You need

15 watt soldering iron
30gage knar wire

optional

flux
desoldering braid
radioshach sells all the stuff you need

i've seen the chip mounted on the side of the PS2, on the outside of the exp. bay

The chip will mount ok right on the board. There should be a side w/less components on it. Glue it or tape it down there. It really is the best place. You may want to get less than a 15 watt iron, at least don't get the 15 watt at radio shack, the tip is not sharp enough. You can get wire there though. They do have 30 ga Kynar wire that works for soldering...

Get everything on Jaice's list (optional stuff too). Don't mount the mod outside for two reasons: 1) someone will break it. 2) you should be keeping the leads as short as possible.

Just mount it to a place on the motherboard buffered by electrical tape and making sure that no metal makes contact with it.

...and don't install it yourself, the solder points are very close together and you could bridge some of the pins (if that happens it's time to break out the solder wick).
