If you mod your xbox with lets say the new matrix mod or any mod for that matter can you play avi movies on the xbox? cause im getting tired of downloading dvd rips in avi format and then having to convert them to mpeg just to be able to burn and watch them on my tv.

Theres no such mod as the Matrix mod, thats for Ps2 only.

What is AVI, there different types on AVI, uncompressed, divx, and other codecs, please be more specific, what type on codecs are you trying to play.

Some AVIs can play.
The XBoxMediaPlayer can play DivX 3 and DivX 4 but not DivX 5 yet.. there are a load of different codecs that the media player is set up for at the moment, but like Jaice says, you need to be more specific on which specific AVI files you are wishing to decode, otherwise the only answer can be.. maybe..

oops yeah sorry LightFast.. DivX 5 sort of plays, but there is a bug in the latest release to do with B-frames (B-VOP). It appeared to be playing at around 15 fps. Very choppy. This was because it wasnt decoding the B-frames. It is fixed for the next release.

And yeah I only have very few DivX 5 stuff, but I should be able to watch these properly on the XBox soon enough then with the next release.

If you use Nero, you can drag a AVI file into the box & it converts it.

Whats the point really since you can play them on your computer for nothing?
