View Full Version : Is My LiteOn toast??

Hi. Bought a 241040 Lite On about 8 months ago. Worked fine mainly though at first was writing slower than the 12x I replaced it with.

Anyway, was working fine, burning images in 3 mins odd and on the fly in 5 or 6 mins.

Then firstly, it stopped recognising discs. Well some brands work better than others. Vivastar blue base usually always work, Datasafe White Label and Traxdata black discs both about 75% , Datasafe Silver Premium about 20% and those cream jobs for £11 an e-properformance have no chance whatsoever!!

When I insert the disc the green light just flashes and u can hear whether or not it is spinning up. If not it spits it out about 60 secs l8r and try again!

The writing speed issue has gone away since I fitted another 30GB HDD and OS on it but the reading discs issue is a major pain.

Not sure about warranty as I bought it from Buy.com obn one of many vouchers I used. Christ, every person I know got some kinda pc gear thru their door when that was on!!

So I have no idea who bought it ,but would any warranty come from them or Lite On themselves?

Or is there a fix for this or should I do as I was on the verge of doing 5 mins ago and just buying the 48x from SVP as methinks it is officialy TOAST :D

Thanks for any info peeps

It sounds like the laser is getting dirty, especially if you have used the burner quite heavily. The only way to clean it effectively is to open the burner up, but that will void the warranty.

I don't know about your local laws but in Oz the warranty is actually provided by the retailer, they 'warrant' that the product is fit for the purpose it was sold for. Factories in Oz generally fix products 'under warranty' to protect their brand name if the retailer is unco-operative.

Retail Web sales should still offer warranty but give the local lite-on distributor a call and see if they'll honour the warranty without a receipt - nothing to lose right. If that doesn't pan out you can have a crack at cleaning the burner yourself http://www.deinmeister.de/cdrep_e.htm

Thx m8 will try that. Im sure I read in the box it came in the warranty is provided by Lite ON but have no proof of purchase as such. Though it is a 1 yr warranty, has 24 speed been out a year?

No, I don't think it's been out for quite a year yet. IIRC it was released in October 2001, but hey my memory......:D

If you look at the top of the drive itself you will see a sticker. This has the date of manufacture stamped on it. Your years warranty wil run from this date as far as Lite-On are concerned.

Buy.com MAY honour it from the date of purchase, a credit card statement is all you need.

Gonna contact Buy.Com or John Lewis as they are now and see whassup. Thing is, I have NO IDEA who I was when I bought it. Every person I know and member of my family has had something sent to them from buy.com as when they were doing the £30 off £60 and £20 off £40 vouchers, I seriously tore the hole out of it.
Maybe thats my punishment

Anyway will get onto them now and if I dont get a quick positive response Im afraid the 48 speed from SVP is a-beggin!! :D

FIXED THE THING :luxhello:

Was reading the specs of the 48x when I noticed new Firmware had just become available for my writer the day before I think. I upgraded that and havent had it reject a disc yet. Writing speed has also greatly improved so I'm a happy camper in the end!! :round:

Thanks for all the help and advice guys. ;)

Glad you found a solution M8. It surprised me as this didn't sound like a firmware problem.

Me too but the thing is still dinky doo and recognises all discs inserted. :) Reading and writing speeds are quite faster too, so if u got one of these 24102B's then CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE NEW FIRMWARE (http://www.liteonit.com/webfw/LTR-24102B/USER/R245S5A.zip)

Worked wonders for me!!! :luxhello:
