sound card surround sound compatible?

can anyone tell me how to check whether my sound card is surround sound compatible...i'm currenty running Windows ME on a dell inspiron8000 laptop and am planning on buying some surround sound speakers but someone said to check to make sure that my card was surround sound compatible but i don't know how to find out...also i need to find out for a dell latitude running windows 2000 professional how to find out whether it's surround sound compatible also...one for me and one for a friend of mine...thanx for all of your help...

You're dell inspiron 8000 does have a Dolby Digital Port. The composite video port doubles as a s/pdif digital audio port for this purpose. You can add surround speakers with a s/pdif input.

What is the model of the dell latitude (need more info)?
