zedy Sep 06, 2002, 11:04 PM It appears that your disk drive is about to die.
CHR15 Sep 07, 2002, 10:05 AM Sounds like the infamous Click of Death affecting IBM drives.
Time to get your backup head on and salvage all you can.
Where Did I Go? Sep 07, 2002, 10:19 AM yep,

...Time to go through the backup proceedure!!!

jeff011n Sep 07, 2002, 11:47 AM how do I backup? And what should I backup? I have never had to do this and I'm so lost
jeff011n Sep 07, 2002, 11:48 AM also is this a repairable issue, or will I need a new pc?
dcm386 Sep 07, 2002, 12:15 PM You shouldn't need a new PC, but you will need a new hard drive :(

It all depends on whether you have a CDRW or not.
If you have, backup as much as you can fill disks with. Not so much the programs if you have them on disk but all your Documents, emails, favorites, downloads etc.
If you haven't got a CDRW, then you're stuck with Favorites, documents and a few critical files.
Do this backup as a priority, there is no way of knowing when (or if) your drive will go kaput!
Try to download tools from the manufaturers website, in IBM's defence (not that they deserve it for selling such cr@p) they do have good recovering tools to download (I'm assuming it is an IBM but almost all the big manufaturers will have some tools to diagnose the drive).
If it IS on its way out, then you'd be well advised to install a new drive and simply drag and drop etc all your data onto the new drive once you have your OS installed.
flintstone Sep 07, 2002, 04:21 PM fit another hd larger than old one partition & format it ( leave old one in ) ,
then use GHOST it comes with NORTON SYSTEM WORKS , it will clone your old drive from a bootdisk that it creates , then you can remove your old hd & your new one should work .
Note you cant just copy one hd to another in windows , windows cant copy itself .
CHR15 Sep 07, 2002, 04:57 PM Sorry, I wasn't being clear. I didnt mean drag ALL data.
Just take it as a good time to reinstall Windows from afresh and copy all your files, favorites, emails etc onto the new drive.
DeSario Sep 08, 2002, 10:30 AM Don't just go hog wild if you get a new HD,,,,Do some reading or get ahold of HP and inquire about how big you can go with your new HD...Older MB's can only handle so much..
