u have no choice anyway m8, no retail outlet in the world is gonna let u strip down ur box prior to purchase, and there prolly gonna tell u to go and get f*kd if u reyurn 2 or 3 box's in the quest for the elusive phillips drive... so it's pretty much pot luck i'm afraid...u may get a phillips drive , but then u may get a tomo, like i got...i bought my xbox s/h, got a good deal too, but then it's an early model, with a scratchy thompson drive, so i got my pioneer 106 in there and it's all rosy now

cant speak of the phillips, but i've chipped 3 box's to date, all have had tomo drives, 1st (mine) is shite!..2nd a m8's, runs _all_ media including cdrs like a dream!..and the 3rd, another m8's, boots some games (eg. nba 2 night) from cheap dvdr media, but mine wont!...pah!, who can make sense of such inconsistent results!

hope my babble has been of some use to ya buddy, doubt it tho

Youcan always get whatever drive you want & install it externally, which is frightfully easy.
