Hi,
I'm using Windows ME
I got adaware and used it (don't know why?) and it found loads of files.

I deleted them, and some registry things it found (which might be the problem) and since then my computer has been acting weird.

First of all it kept crashing, and there'd be instances where the icons next to the clock would get messy, esp when I move the cursor over them. Then when I resetted it, it would get to windows logo, then restart again and again. I tried using system restore (to a restore point in mid august) and the comp was still very slow and crash-prone.

What on earth can I do to restore the stability of my system, what on earth has this stupid adaware program done? I'd rather keep the spyware and have a stable system. (hindsight is a wonderful thing)

I can't reinstall windows, because when I brought the computer, they gave me the serial/license etc, but no CD. And I'm not prepared to pay lots of money for XP, even though it'll probably be better.

So, short of reinstalling windows, is there anything I can do to make my system work properly?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

M.E.

my specs are p3 1ghz, 256 ram, 20 gig hard drive, and I'm running Windows ME (which was fine until I deleted the alleged spyware files identified by adaware)

Ad-ware makes backups....check to see if theres a file u may have deleted that you needed.

Try reinstalling the software with advertising which have been deleted. It's more simple than reinstalling Win ME (impossible). The solution above is good enough if you find that backup file and restore works.

Start, Run, type msconfig press enter, go to Startup tab, uncheck any unnecessary programs

thanks for the suggestions, much appreciated, will try them and see how it goes. Hopefully it'll work,if not, I guess i'll try to obtain xp and install that, maybe it'll be more stable.

thanks

it's not win me that's the problem it's the other free programs you've got installed that's acting up now.
adaware detects spyware and removes it.
most of the free programs you get to download or off cd's in computer mag's contain this spyware(adverts) that's why you get them free.you can register the software before running adaware and then the program will work fine.
the easiest thing to do is go to add & remove programs in control panel and remove the programs that you have either on your harddrive(downloaded) or on cd's,etc and then reinstall them or go to system restore in the start bar and set your computer back to a time before you ran adaware.
hope it helps.

Probably a bit late now but before you get Ad-aware to remove any adware/spyware it finds, use the program's backup feature; it is not an automatic function but an option which must be intentionally exercised.
