dj storm Sep 08, 2002, 08:37 AM i am looking to buy an 80gig drive but i'm not sure what would be a good price.
i have found an "IBM Deskstar 120GXP 80gb 7200rpn ATA100 EIDE Bare" drive for £79.99,
is this a good price?
also do i need to look out for any compatibility issues?
i am currently running a pentium 3 with 192 ram
CHR15 Sep 08, 2002, 08:52 AM £79.99 for a GXP drive!!!
Its not worth 79p including postage.
IBM GXP drives ar not compatible with Computers period!!
Get something like a Maxtor, in fact, anything other than an IBM!
I'll back up my claims if you still want to proceed but my advice is to spend a few quid more and get something more reliable.
Ankerson Sep 08, 2002, 08:54 AM Seagate Barracuda IV's are about the best drives you can get today.

Sorry to say this CHR15 but you do not have a clue what you are talking about. If you had of said this about the GXP60's then I would have been with you all the way but the GXP120's are great drives.

There are reliability problems with all the GXP drives period.
IBM have tried to fend off some flak with the 333 power on hours clause.
The Class Action Filed against IBM wasn't for the 60GXP series (although I'm glad you admit they too are rubbish!) but the 75GXP Series.
The original Complaint can be read here:
http://www.sheller.com/IBM_complaint.pdf
I could post links for pages and pages about GXP's being RMA'd but Im sure I could also post loads of links of success stories.
I researched these after buying one myself, but decided to install it on someone elses computer after researching IBM drives, I'm glad I did.
I fitted it, partitioned it, formatted it, then installed Win ME on it with no problems.
I then attempted to set up a dual boot system with Windows XP, the installation failed due to a corrupt drive.
A Scandisk revealed bad sectors.
I attempted to fix the bad sectors which initially passed.
Tried to install XP again, and once again, bad sectors.
Tried to format the whole thing which failed due to bad sectors.
Used IBM's own tools to repair it which succeded, I managed to produce a working dual booting system!!
It lasted one Month, then it came back after making some funny noises
My comments come from Personal Experience AND many hours of research on the Web.
If you have an IBM drive the split is about 60/40 in favour. I believe those to be woefully poor odds where all my data is concerned.
If you have an IBM, download the IBM tools NOW and keep them safe. There is a fair to good chance you may need them.
chi2000 Sep 10, 2002, 11:17 AM Could you please post me some links showing that GXP120's are no good and back your point up.
chi2000 Sep 10, 2002, 11:20 AM Also IBM have taken back the 333 power on hours clause now.
I think you better get some up to date info M8.
