Cable is capable of going much faster, but in many cases DSL can be better. My cable (RCN) is pretty poor. It's a hybrid connection (14.4 phone line upstream), and I get about 20 kbs. When I restart and download a huge binary from a news server, it peaks around 150, but it the speek quickly fades to about 20 kbs after only a few hours. It's a real pain in the arse to restart since it is connected to a router in another part of the house, and the only way to restart it is to unplug it and wait 10 minutes or so for it to connect. My cable is out quite a bit. It's actually been down for over a week. If had the option to get DSL here, I would definitely get it. What I really want is Cablevision/Optimum Online.

The best thing to do is compare the actual ISP's that are available to you. dslreports.com (http://dslreports.com) is my favorite site for that stuff. They have charts on all the most common broadband connections.

Cable is faster most of the time.

Most DSL is around 1.0 or 1.5 Mbits Download

Cable is 2.0 or more Mbits/s download..

In my area Cable is over twice as fast as DSL...Roadrunner Rocks..:D

Depends, with Cable, if your the only person In your neighborhood, its faster than DSL, but if your not, get DSL, cause Cable is shared.

I had cable I use to get 700kb-1.7mb, then when everyone started getting it speeds dropped to 150-300kb, probably lower now. Next' ill try DSL

No it's not shared, your cable company might need to do an upgrade in your area. It is split by area and if it is setup right everyone in that area can pull at max speed.

I am on Cable and I get 3.2 MB/s downloads, 384 up. And that has never changed because Time Warner knows what they are doing. ;)

How it is setup is each "area" has a certian number of routers and it's broken down to a router for each smaller area, then on each router there are a number of modems. Each Router is setup to allow max bandwith for the modems even if all the modems on that router are pulling at the same time.

How do I know this?

I work for a cable company. ;)

DSL is not even close to that speed 99% of the time, it depends on the company and your wallet. ;)

Most DSL is 1.5mb/s downloads max.

And if you are more than a Mile away from their switch the speed starts to degrade the farther you go past the mile marker.

Another issue is service if your connection goes down, most of the time you are looking at 2 weeks min before your connection is backup. I have a few friends on DSL and I can tell you when they are down it's dialup for awhile.

Cable is sharred, you might get 3.2mb per sec, but your probably the only one on your street with Cable.

DSL is better if Cable is to slow for you.

Want Faster, pay 1000$ a month for T1, or more for T3
If your rich get OC12 or OC24 or OC48 which has a download speed on 2488 megabytes per sec, who needs that much?

No it's not shared, it's a myth started by the DSL companies as a sales tool.

And I do know what I am talking about. ;)

And no I'm not the only one on my street with Cable, I live in Town so I guess that kinda blows your assumtion away....
