I would like to know if there is really that much of a difference between the non-progressive and the progressive. Also, which brand and model would any of you prefer? Finally, how much longer will progressive scan be around before an HD like quality player comes out. Basically I don't want to waste my money. Thanks.

Yes, if your TV is 32" or larger and not a full time progressive scan built into the TV. Most high quality RPTV's have full time pro scan. :D

There is a big difference in a picture on a 61" TV, no lines.
Just buy a cheap one and try it out and then take it back if it is doesn't work. They are around $120 at most places. Also if you do not have component inputs on your TV you may not see much if any improvement.
