Ask u dial up operator, If you have Call Waiting, receiving a call while you are currently connected may result in the modem disconnecting.

Most 56K modems are designed to recover from significant line noise hits so chances are call waiting won't help at all.

Do a search on the search engines for call waiting modems. These modems are a bit more expensive than regular modems but they will notify you of incoming call while you're surfing if you have call waiting.
