ThE SnAkE Sep 16, 2002, 10:05 AM i have 2 computers and want to share the internet between them, can anyone help. currently have ntl cable modem? any info will help. Van Nugent Sep 16, 2002, 10:47 AM Moving to Open... windle Sep 16, 2002, 11:58 AM You can use Internet connection sharing but this means that the computer connected to the modem needs to be on so that the other pc can connect to the net. Other than that, The best and easiest but most expensive way is with a Router. This is where I learned to do mine http://www.practicallynetworked.com Ant212 Sep 16, 2002, 01:40 PM Go here, everything you need to know about Networking on NTL. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips/index.html jasev Sep 16, 2002, 08:56 PM use a 2 way splitter like the ones ntl uses. the label has this on it VC210 IN VOCOM 2 way splitter 5-1000 MHz 1.5dB each connector i don't know how easy they are to get hold of but if you have any probs thenlet me know as i have one spare. hope it helps. ThE SnAkE Sep 17, 2002, 07:46 AM jasev have u got msn add me thesnakeuk@hotmail.com thanx Ant212 Sep 18, 2002, 07:59 AM Err, What is the splitter going to do? ThE SnAkE Sep 18, 2002, 08:22 AM urm still confused, what stuff do i need? Ant212 Sep 18, 2002, 02:16 PM Basically what you need, are three Network cards (Nics), and a length of Cat5 Crossover cable. There are other options, but much more expensive. Software required, Win98SE minimum, which will allow to use a progam calles ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). Put two of the Nics into the one machine, and one Nic in the other. Connect the Cable modem to the machine with two Nics, then run the crossover cable from the second Nic to the other Nic in second machine. Now go to the link I gave you in an earlier post (Robin Walker), and read up how to get it all running. Ignore the post about an NTL splitter, it won't be needed. jasev Sep 18, 2002, 08:24 PM Originally posted by Ant212 Err, What is the splitter going to do? the splitter is to run 2 cable modems through the one digital connection ntl installed. if you're using 56k modems then this doesn't apply. ThE SnAkE Sep 19, 2002, 06:30 AM ok a quick question - can both computers be on the internet at the same time? Ant212 Sep 19, 2002, 07:25 PM Err, He's only got one cable modem. Splitter not required. jasev Sep 20, 2002, 01:28 AM just buy another cable modem cheap off the net or wherever you can get one and hook it up to the other computer, connect both modems to the splitter which is attached to the f plug socket on the connection ntl installed and make sure it's hooked up the same way to the computer as your original modem is to yours e.g if it was connected to the usb port then connect the new one to the usb port of the other computer. now you don't need to register the other modem ,just plug it in and you should now have 2 modems working independantly from each other and no extra cost. hope it helps. ThE SnAkE Sep 20, 2002, 07:10 AM ok ill look another cable modem! but if i just use the one i got at the moment, i wont be able to access the internet on both computers at the same time? Ant212 Sep 20, 2002, 07:31 AM Yes, you can. Again, if you read the link I gave you, everything is explained. jasev Sep 20, 2002, 07:51 AM ThE SnAkE email me ejasev@softhome.net i'll send you a cable modem and splitter for you to try,if all works out ok then we can make a deal for it or if it doesn't work out then just send it back. ThE SnAkE Sep 20, 2002, 07:51 AM is it cheaper for me to buy another cable modem and network? cos i can get my hands on a second modem for around the 20.00 pound mark. jasev Sep 20, 2002, 08:13 AM in the longrun the cheapest and safest way is to set it up is like Ant212 posted. Ant212 Sep 20, 2002, 12:47 PM You CAN NOT use a second cable modem without notifying NTL, how are you going to connect without registering the MAC address? jasev Sep 20, 2002, 04:02 PM Originally posted by Ant212 You CAN NOT use a second cable modem without notifying NTL, how are you going to connect without registering the MAC address? i've hooked a cable modem up in a mates house (through the f plug for the cable tv box)who had a dial up connection and it was running great. the modem belonged to a different mate who used to use through a proper cable account so i don't know if this had anything to with it. but it did work and we didn't have to enter any account info. if you have a cable modem try it on someone else's comp and ntl connection to see for yourself (i was using a terajet 210). Scouserdave Sep 20, 2002, 08:09 PM Snake, I run two computers on broadband through one modem. You need three nic, ethernet cards and a length of crossover cable, two nic's in the main computer to access the net and one in the other comp connecting both with the crossover cable, network the comps together and he presto! easy! with XP should take you less than 20 mins and both comps can access the net at the same time. ThE SnAkE Sep 20, 2002, 08:17 PM cool i got xp. i got a problem with uploading its so slow on xp? can u help? ElaineM Sep 21, 2002, 12:59 AM This should have been in the networking forum in the first place and perhaps it wouldn't have became so long. :o The cheapest way is to do as Scouserdave and some other members described. You want to be running a good firewall at all times for security reasons. Wheneven you get some extra money, it would be very wise to purchase a router. As far as the uploading speed goes, your provider caps that at a certain speed, and there's not much, if anything you can do about it. |
