I do, I played a backup in my PS2 without voiding the warentee, and at the time I believe I was the only one in the world to have done so.

I actually found the cog trick by complete accident, the PS2 I picked up on release day (UK) broke down, I needed to remove a rental game from the drive to return it. I remember even explaining to sony how I had done it.
