just wondering if there are currently any xbox games that are proving/notoriously difficult to get decent 100% working copies of?

Well, NFL2k3 loads hella slow at the beginning, just when it first trys to boot up. Because there are 2000+ files on the root directory, so maybe the Xbox is searching for the files.

Since our backups are ripped to HD then burned. It looses the original layout of the files, how they are structured on the DVD location. So it's less efficient.

IMO, anyway.

Maybe, I burned it bad. lol, but all my other games are fine. Just this game, because of all the damn files on the root directory.

the most unusual i've had so far is Halo.....my copy loads fine, plays the intro+first level no problem, but when I try to resume my saved game I get a 'Dirty or damaged disc' message. Do you think the problem is the discs or a pal/ntsc incompatability with the saved game (not that I know whether my copy is NTSC....but the save game was definitely created using the PAL original). Normally, a PAL saved game wouldn't even be recognised by a NTSC copy and vice versa so I'm pretty sure that's not the problem......

any ideas?

are you running original Halo? If its backup, try running it from hardisk & see if you get the same message. If you dont, its media-problem :)
