Iron_Man Sep 25, 2002, 07:29 AM Hi Everyone out there
I hope someone may be able to help with this very annoying prob.
I am trying to back-up most of my dvd collection, all of which are in
widescreen (16:9) format. DVD2AVI reports 16:9 format PAL 25fps
movie. When it is finished frameserving, the movie has reverted
to 4:3 normal format. I have re-formatted my HD, re-installed Win XP
pro and all related ripping S/W. The first movie I backed up worked
perfect, but subsequent back-up's revert to 4:3. Has anyone had this
problem and found a solution?
Thanks in advance for any help U may be able 2 offer

rishardc Sep 25, 2002, 09:22 AM What programs are you using?
Iron_Man Sep 25, 2002, 01:32 PM Hi
Smart Ripper 2.41 - to rip the movie
DVD2AVI 1.73 - for frameserving
TMPEGEnc 2.58 - to create mpeg2 stream
I think the prob could be smart ripper, as when I load the .m2v
file into DVD2AVI, it displays at 4:3
celtic_druid Sep 25, 2002, 03:20 PM Smart Ripper just rips it doesn't alter the stream. I would think that the problem was in TMPGEnc where you have not selected the correct aspect ratio.
Iron_Man Sep 26, 2002, 06:24 AM Hi again
Don't think the problem is TMPEGEnc, I have selected the 16:9 aspect
ratio. The prob seems to be between ripping the movie and using DVD2AVI. I have tried DVDDecryptor to rip the movie, but I get same results with the aspect ratio. Is there another prog that can do the same as DVD2AVI?
rishardc Sep 26, 2002, 09:32 AM I'm pretty sure its tmpegenc as well because I have done the same thing many times on accident. There are 2 places to change your aspect ratio. I think setting it to 16x9 is actually wrong. I think it should be set to 1:1 vga or something like that. I can't remember the real settings. I always try it, and look at the preview, notice its wrong and then change the settings. I never bother writing it down. CCE makes things much easier.
Iron_Man Sep 26, 2002, 09:43 AM As I said earlier, The first time I ripped a DVD (Lord of the Rings) and opened the .m2v file with DVD2AVI, the aspect ratio was correctly displayed at 16:9. Subsequent rips alway display at 4:3 in DVD2AVI
celtic_druid Sep 26, 2002, 11:30 AM Can't see that what DVD2AVI says would make any difference.. At the end of the day the stream is always 720x576/480.
If DVD2AVI says it is 4:3, but you know it is 16:9, then it is 16:9 and this is what you set it up as when encoding.
Iron_Man Sep 26, 2002, 12:24 PM Thanks for all your help, it is apreciated.
Have re-formatted a HD, re-installed Win xp pro and all ripping progs.
First rip (Harry Potter) has worked perfect, displays at 16:9 and encodes at 16:9. Then tried Pretty Woman for a second rip, reverts back to only displaying and encoding at 4:3. I was wondering if this Vfp thingy file could cause any probs?
celtic_druid Sep 27, 2002, 03:23 AM When you import the D2V into TMPGEnc if it selects 4:3 instead of 16:9, just change it.
Iron_Man Sep 27, 2002, 08:02 AM The problem happens before it gets to TMPGEnc.
It happens after the vob's have been transfered to HD and opening them with dvd2avi. dvd2avi will state it is 16:9 format when u save the project to .d2v file, but it's apperance on screen is a squashed 4:3 format. When the d2v file is imported into tmpgenc, it don't matter what aspect ratio u select, it always givs 4:3.
This is giving me real grief, feel like throwing the pc through the windae
celtic_druid Sep 27, 2002, 09:28 AM I just encoded a 4:3 D2V in TMPGEnc as 16:9 works fine.. well except for the fact that it really was supposed to be 4:3. I just changed the input and output settings from 4:3 to 16:9.
rishardc Sep 27, 2002, 09:30 AM The appearance on screen from what? What did you open the .d2v with that you were able to see it in 4x3? The only program that I would open it with is Tmpegenc and that will show it to you in 4x3 because it is set too.
Iron_Man Sep 27, 2002, 10:30 AM I opened the ripped vob's (Pretty Woman, using dvddecrypter) with dvd2avi. This is where the aspect ratio turns into a squashed 4:3. If u don't mind, can I send u an e-mail with screen captures to try and illustrate the problem better
Cheers IM
celtic_druid Sep 27, 2002, 12:37 PM Don't worry about DVD2AVI's preview, TMPGEnc's preview or any of that. Only worry about the final output.
DVD2AVI displays the stream at actual size 720x576/480 and as said TMPGEnc displays 4:3 despite what the aspec ratio of the output is.
Iron_Man Sep 27, 2002, 01:00 PM well I guess we better close this thread guy's.
Thanks for all your help and advice
Many thanks Iron Man 2
