Often, and usually when the machine has been on for a day or two, when I try to connect to an FTP server using any one of several FTP clients, my PC blue screens with teh message 'Beginning dump of physical memory to disk', then it counts to 100 and then reboots.

I found something on the MS site that suggested this problem could be cured by installing SP3, which I have done, but to no avail.

Anyone got any suggestions?

If SP3 doesn't help, you'll need to see if there are update drivers for your modem & graphics card. The updates will hopefully fix the problem.

If you need help getting drivers, step over to Driver forum.

The memory dump is the result of an error. Windows saves an image of the PC as it was and where it thinks the error came from when the errors occurred and creates a file where you can view it and (rarely) see where the error was.
The fault you have should be listed above the dump error message, that is the bit you need to focus on...
