buscuitboy Oct 04, 2002, 12:20 AM I've seen some places selling xbox units with larger hard drives (80GB & 120GB). Is the hard drive in the xbox a standard PC hard drive? If so, would it be hard to do myself in the future if I just get a regular xbox with the standard 8GB hard drive? I don't want to pay extra now, but I might find that I may want to upgrade it at a later date. I've done it easily with a regular PC, but was just curious about the procedure involved with an xbox. Thanks
Ninja Oct 04, 2002, 10:52 AM you ahve t set the hdd up a bit but it only takes a few minutes, then yep just plug it in and your nearly away, you do need a mod chip installed though which supports the hdd upgrade or else flash the onboard bios, search this frum for more info
Jaice Oct 04, 2002, 02:29 PM You need a certian modchip to upgrade a HD, and set it up.
handyguy Oct 04, 2002, 06:45 PM Tops out at 120 gig at this time. You can put bigger than that in but not worth it. Eventually the hd get slower as it fragments. Also, it takes time to put the game on the HD. etc. read the board youll find plenty of info

hi, i have a xecuter chipped xbox, can i just take out my xbox hardrive and put in a 40gig one? what do u mean u have to set your hd first? im guessing u need a pc to set the hd right?? if thats they case, i havent got a pc, does this mean im ****ed then?
thanks in advance,
p.s. i can get a copy of that goldberg without a pc thing evox 2 on dvdr off someone, can i use that disk to set the hardrive?
Stusy Oct 07, 2002, 04:01 AM Firstly as said you need a modchip that supports the hard drive upgrade.
Then connect the X-box up to your PC using either cross over cable or standard cable and HUB.
I burnt the latest Evolution X on a DVDr with a modified evox.in that gave me a staitic IP 192.168.0.2
also under ftp put:-
user = xbox and passsword = xbox.
also enable the install Menu.
Set my home PC to 192.168.0.1
Ran FlashFXP
went to quick connect, put in
192.168.0.2
xbox
xbox
then copied drives c and e to PC hard drive.
Disconnected from FlashFXP
Switched off X-box
Swap Hard drive
turn on X-box with Evolution X still in drive.
Then go to Install menu and run Action 11
that formats the hard drive in about 30 seconds.
Connect to X-box with FlashFXP and then copy all the files back to C and E.
At this stage you can setup Evolution X and games on the hard drive.
Remove Evolution X from drive and reboot.
All should be fine.

Flowzarus Oct 07, 2002, 08:27 AM If you don't have a PC its hard but I think its possible. All you need is the latest copy of EvolutionX and there is a HD prep utility inside it. You boot to the EvoX CD and then tell it to prepare your new HD.
Go to Buy / Sell / Trade and find somebody selling XBox DVDrs...definetly get it on DVDr.
handyguy Oct 07, 2002, 11:06 AM New HDs have to have zeros on them. Some of the new HD's don't as some guy pointed out wheen he checked his & used ones surely don't.....but often the new ones should be ready to put in.
Flowzarus Oct 07, 2002, 02:40 PM Mine (Western Digital) definetly wasn't 0'd out. But I thought the new EvoX 0'd out a HD.
I did mine before the new EvoX so I'm not positive but I thought I saw that on another site.
OPTIMUS-CRIME Oct 07, 2002, 05:24 PM well, what i did was back up the original contents of an xbox hard drive (the c: and e: partitions) and put them on a cd.
made a restore cd you could say.
if you use a restore cd like the one i made, the latest evox build and boxplorer you "can" upgrade the hdd without a pc.
simply prep the hard drive with evox.
boot up the xbox with boxplorer on a cdrw.
swap the boxplorer cd for the restore cd and copy all the files to their respective partitions.
Cheers!
OPTIMUS-CRIME Oct 07, 2002, 05:26 PM oh yeah, if you need a copy of the restore cd i made drop me a line and i'll send you a copy in the mail
peace
