Norr Oct 04, 2002, 11:48 AM My DVD reader is a bit fussy on backups. Anybody fitted an alternative reader ?
I thought of installing a PC DVD but aint to sure what make would fit or how to connect it.
greenhead90 Oct 04, 2002, 02:12 PM i have a liteon which works well for me, to fit www.xbox-scene.com has tutorials!
Norr Oct 04, 2002, 02:30 PM Is your liteon fitted in the case of the x box or dose it sit on top?
Also do you find it reads backups that the original reader wont?
arthur_p_huxake Oct 04, 2002, 04:48 PM hi, i got a crappy thomspon drive that is quite fussy too, replaced it with a pioneer 106 (outside the box, simplicity itself too install!!)..and everthing is hunky dory now!..so to answer ur question, yes, a replacment dvd drive is better able to read discs that ur original drive wont!

chindavon21 Oct 05, 2002, 01:55 AM Go to Walmart and buy a new system, take it apart and swap the DVD-Rom drive and return to the store the same day. Had a couple of buddies do that and works great now.
Norr Oct 05, 2002, 10:11 AM Got to say, I like Walmart. However, they don't have a store in Scotland and I aint that lucky to get away with it. A new pioneer drive is about $60 here, about the price of a legit game, I'l give it a try and let you know how it goes.
Norr Oct 05, 2002, 01:16 PM Well! the pioneer drive is connected up & runs all the backups. Crazy Taxi is a bit slow to load but it may just be the game.
Anybody got any idea what percentage of boxes have fussy readers?
killark Oct 07, 2002, 02:44 AM i was thinking about getting a replacement dvd rom(creative 12x) but i dont know what brands work. is anyone using any other drives besides the pioneer or the liteon?
Norr Oct 07, 2002, 04:57 AM From what I'v read in the groups any PC DVD will work as long as you leave the original drive in the X-box. This means you will always have your PC DVD sitting outside the the case of the X-box and you wont be able to play original games unless you reconect the original drive.
I would like to replace my original drive in the box with a more reliable one, hopefully someone will source a good replacement that slots straight in.
Anybody got any idears who sells the replacement dvd drives? (And has them in stock)
arthur_p_huxake Oct 07, 2002, 05:42 AM i'm not saying this is true of all xboxs, but i don't need to have the original drive connected! that is, i can disconnect the yellow plug from the drive and it'll still boot games...but not dvds films!?!...weird i know, but my xtender v1.1 chipped xbox will boot any backup i got (except i copy of doa 3, which did work prior to having a label put on it but doesn't now!...yet works in 4 other box's i've tried...spooky!) but it won't play a dvd unless i connect up the original drive and put a dvd in that too!?!...it aint a problem, just a puzzler...i do leave the yellow plug connected tho cos i'm continually swapping the original drive back in to rip original games, it doesn't take long to switch the ide cable over :-)
u can swap the drive for a pc dvd drive so that it's not sat on top looking ugly tho, but i haven't tried it...here's a few links:

handyguy Oct 07, 2002, 11:02 AM cdrws work pretty well in my thompson box.....silver bottom cds only.
Norr Oct 07, 2002, 11:32 AM I agree, it dosent take long to change the cables over but it would be nice to have a switch which would mean you could have the best of both drives at the flick of the switch.
Any thoughts!
