I thought there was a way to remove a redundant item from MsConfig\Startup ?

I have an unchecked item relating to a Program long since uninstalled

I believe you can use tweakUI search google for it or download the powertoys from microsoft its in there.

they are in the registry under

To invoke the Registry Editor, click Start then Run. In the Open box, type regedit.exe followed by enter.

The keys you're interested in are as follows:-

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Once
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Services
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run ServicesOnce
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Once

backup your reg before editing

sorry i thought the powertoys could delete the msconfig entry like they can for the add/remove programs box ;)
