When I recently installed a new motherboard (GIGABYTE) I broke the hard
plastic clasp where the CPU fan contacts the actual CPU (Everyone on the Guide is probably aware how much pressure you sometimes have to apply to get the CPU fan attached)

The clasp however was,nt completely broken. So the fan is attached but the contact is not as effective. The nub of my problem is this:

My CPU temp is measured at 51 degrees (it should be around 35 which I
undertand is about normal). This probably reflects the reduced contact.
OK so far.

Now can anyone tell me whether this increased temp can result in a measured CPU speed reduction.I purchased an ATHLON 1.7 XP.which should measure at around 1.5 GHZ.

Windows XP (I,ve got a dual boot Windows 2000/XP Professional) is
informing me that the CPU speed is only 1.1 GHZ.Is this because of the
fan/temp problem or did the company I purchased the CPU from send me the wrong processor.I,ve also measured the CPU speed using a program
designed to do this and sure enough it confirms the speed as 1.1 GHZ.

If it is the fan connection thats the problem then I,ll need to buy a new fan and motherboard thus giving me back my 1.5 GHZ.
If not then presumeably my CPU is only 1.1 GHZ.

Any comments or information appreciated.

u wont get an athlon to run at 35 unless u have it in a fridge :D

sounds like your fsb is set to 100 instead of 133 ,look in the bios to change it

Yeah sound's like the FSB is set to 100Mhz instead of 133Mhz.

The temperature won't affect the cpu speed.
As it gets hotter it will just make it more prone to errors.
Also the hotter they get the quicker they fail.

Thanks for the response guys.

In fact it was exactly as you suggested, except the change to 133 FSB was a switch on the moptherboard.

I still think the CPU fan is a potential problem, however I,ve now got my
1.5 GHZ processor.

Thanks again

My CPU temp is measured at 51 degrees too mate and i have a huge f**ki*r of a fan stuck on top of my xp 1700+- there just hot chips mate also they lag out @100% cpu usage a lot quicker than the p4 would
