i'm having no luck burning my homemade vcd with my sony external usb2.0 burner. tried with nero 5.9 and clonecd 4.0, and both failed.

i tried on the fly and from an image on the hd.

nero with only get to the lead-in and i get error: ide/scsi device, command aborted. the program doesn't abort. the light on the burner stays on and it keeps on spinning. can't even cancel nero.

clonecd will look like it's burning and the bar said 100% complete. it will then clear the buffer, but seems to get stuck there. i have to power off the burner to get the disc out. it only looks like it burned only half the content.

what i notice is that my transfer speed and burning speed is pretty slow. the slowest i've seen was around 650kb/sec and highest was 2048kb/sec. dma is on for both primary and secondary ide controller.

is the problem with win, burner soft, or burner itself?

the cable i used is a ge usb2.0 cable. i installed the via usb2.0 driver that came on the cd with the motherboard (msi kt3 ultra2). the board has 6 usb2 ports on it, so every port should support usb2. after installing the driver, winxp shows hi-speed usb port in device manager.

i downloaded the latest aspi4.71 for xp from adaptec, and did a normal install. no forcing.

the media is a taiyo yuden(spelling?) rated at 12x. when burning, i set the speed to 12x or 16x with powerburn on. i ran the cd speed from nero to check the transfer rate. all i'm getting is 4x.

do i need different cables, drivers or change the settings on the board?

note: tried doing a rollup last night, and computer crashed. redid windows so i'm back to pre-sp1.

tried the usb2 i dl from ms. when xp installs the usb and try to look for the driver, it doesn't seem to recognize the drivers. it only recognize the driver from the cd. don't know why.

i don't think aspi is the problem, because i tried the drive on my other system using a belkin usb pci card. the system has win2k and winxp on separate hd and both have aspi, nero, and clonecd. both worked.

just bought another belkin usb2.0card and usb2.0 cable. if they work then the mb goes back to the store.
