It's the PIO, DMA setting thingy for the drive. I always forget which one it is. Search the forum a little, read it before somewhere.

have you got them on the same cable if so split your reader and writer to different cables

split your drives onto different cables
dowload latest format of nero
and use prassi with the update engine

and if you have other writing programmes on get rid of them because they cause problems too

This one of a few things ? I had the same problem when I tried to burn at 2Xand I tried disabling the UDMA and running in PIO mode , it sorted the problem but I could only burn at 1X and I had another drive on the same chain ,my reader (DVD-ROM) this started to malfunction (wouldn't write over 8X ) went to pioneers web page in the STATES and found a so called solution which worked for 1 day but involved upgrading the IDE controller drivers for the latest ones but I'm running XP which over wrote these drivers and reinstalled the default ones hence only working for one day . So I mamually delted the drivers and when it asked to replece them I forced it use the new ones from the chipset manufacturers and now everything is fine re-enabled the UDMA etc and even burns at 2X .
Hope this helps
