Games you need a mod chip, films I think will run even on unmodded PS2s, but someone can correct me if I'm wrong there...

A neo 2.2 will play dvd-rs if you have the right gameshark and an original dvd with a large toc on PS2 version 1-6

Boot instructions
http://www.ps2docs.com

Even on a version 5

www.psx-tech.com

has an 8 wire version 5 diagram
but its just easier to install a no solder mod

A neo 2.2 wont work on a version 7 though

Yes, you can play back-ups - search for info on no-solder mod chips, and movies, too
Haven't backed-up a DVD movie for my own use yet, but I created one, and my PS2 played it perfectly! It was even on a Pioneer DVD-RW disc, and had no trouble. Anyways, good luck!
