I have the Pioneer A03 & am using the £1.99 unbranded blank media.

I've been burning at 1x since day one but am thinking about burning at 2x, The writer will allow the media to be burned at 2x so I figure why not?

I think i've done a couple of movies at 2x before & didn't get any problems so should I continue at 1x or 2x?

Thanks

P.S : I hear alot of people saying that the cheap £1.99 discs were very poor & that they've had 5 out of 20 go wrong but I must've burned almost 100 of these discs & have not had any problems at all, Could it just be that some standalones do not like these discs & not actually a fault with the discs themselves?

I cant get any other discs except Apple to burn at 2x with my A03. I only burn playstation 2 games but..I still only burn at 2x. Where do you get your media from?

Some software will allow you to select 2X but will not really burn at 2X. If you time it there will be know difference in time. The budget dvd-

Some software will allow you to select 2X but if you time it, it is only burning at 1X. The "budget dvd-r`s" cannot burn at 2X on the A03 as their manufacturer does not pay a license fee to pioneer to use the Japanese die. It is for this reason that most non-approved discs give less reliable results as the european or "copy" dies are not quite right.

A firmware was made by a disc manufacturer to write the £1.99`s at 2X, but last I heard it was a little bit buggy.

Basically, if the cheaper brands work on your machine and you don`t pass the discs on they are ok for you. The main problem is that "some people" sell backups and unless they use Apple, Pioneer, Mitsui or Verbs the amount of returned disks would be enormous. At least if you use apple and someone can`t play it you can say to them, well you can`t play DVD-R.

I buy backups which come on cheap media and they play very poorly on all of my 4 DVD roms and 2 standalones. So what I have to do is use my A03 to image the disc and re-burn to apple.

I then give the original cheapy to a mate who has a £99 Cyberhome that plays them no problems.

Well I use the cheap media from svp and at 1x have not had any problems. When I burned at 2x the picture jumped all over the place.
I play them on a dansai 852 and have not ahd any problems and the only player to have problems was a cyberhome.
Although the cyberhome was also have problems playing vcd's to so I think it is the player.

The reason you cant burn our (fwsltd) discs at 2 speed has nothing to do with the dye, its the coding on the lookup table. We would have to pay pioneer an extortionate amount of money for them to grant this license.
The dye has nothing to do with the 2speed issue, we could use the same dye as the japs and you still wouldnt beable to burn them at 2speed.

The firmware we have is very buggy still although we are hoping to have a new one in the very near future so keep your eyes and ears peeled folks
