Hi,

I just installed windows 2000 server onto my main pc but wish to share its broadband connection with a client pc with windows 95 on, the network is all setup i.e. both can see each other, both can ping each other etc. In the past i've done this with windows xp and it simply requires enabling ics in the network adaptor properties and then set the client to auto detect proxy settings. However, i've tried doing this in windows 2000 server but with no joy, after doing a search on google i have found that there are 2 ways to do this 1) ics and 2) routing and remote access i have tried to setup both of them but with no joy :(

Does anyone have any experience in setting this up on win2k server with win95 clients? Also which method is best and and easiest to setup and how do i set it up?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Does it pick up the IP address from the server? Win2k server has a seperate DHCP prog that you can configure properly but I think it's disabled by default.

If all else fails you could try manually edditing the network info on the client.

Give it a manual ip address & set the default gateway & DNS server settings to the ip address of the server. This should work but like you I've never tried it with a Win95 client.

easiest is to use a software router like Winroute or Wingate.

but if you are using the server as a active directory server then they wont work as they need their own DNS service which conflicts with the Win2K DNS, which is needed for AD.

Routing and remote access is the better of the other options but it can be a pain to set up. search on MS support and technet as they have a lot of documentation on it (can be hard to find though).

Thanks for your input guys!

Richskie - I have success fully got the dchp server working properly i.e. leasing out ips to clients and i have already tried setting the gateway and dns to my server but with no joy :(

DNRC - I do have active directory server so it looks like routing and remote access is the way, i've looked through some of the documentation that comes with the os help files but i cant seem to find an step by step guide for setting it up, i will try the ms technet site.....

If anyone has any experience in setting this up please feel free to post some step by step instructions :)

Thanks,

Mark

MS don't have step-by-step instructions. Not detailed ones anyway, some basic ones exist but they were hard to find.

Search on google also - I found some stuuf there.

Also, have you considered a proper router?

Enable Internet Connection Sharing on a network connection:

In Control Panel, double-click Network and Dial-Up Connections.

Right-click the connection you want to share, and then click Properties.

On the Sharing tab, click to select the Enable Internet Connection Sharing for this connection check box.

Make sure you can see the other computers on your LAN, MAKE SURE, and set them to obtain an IP automatically.

In the IE browser, click on tools, internet options, Connections, Lan Settings, make sure you have no check makes here. Reboot and you should be able to surf.

If the connection you are sharing is, a Dial-up connection and you want the connection to dial automatically when another computer on your home network attempts to use external resources; click to select the "Enable on-demand dialling" check box.

NOTE: To enable ICS, you must have administrative rights.

Oh, make sure you can transfer files back and forth and you can see your LAN.
