Okay, I am planning to change the DVD-Rom drive on my xbox; can someone tell me which DVD Drive should I use for the Best Results?
What brand should I replace it with?
 007
Jaymus Oct 18, 2002, 03:52 PM People mentioned the Pioneer 106. There was a site that you can do a complete replacement, I forgot where, it was a pioneer 500DM or something like that.
You can hookup a secondary DVD rom to boot CD-Rs, I assume almost any decent DVD rom drive would do.
To do a complete replacement of the original, it has to be a specific one. I am uncertain if it still booted the originals.
marvelguy68 Oct 19, 2002, 04:04 AM not all dvdroms work with the xbox. i know the artec 16x dvdrom works great! you can find it on pricewatch for around $38 shipped.
arthur_p_huxake Oct 19, 2002, 04:44 AM i got a pioneer 106 in mine, outside the box, just sat on top of the original drive...it's easy enuff swapping over to use original xbox drive for original discs then, cos _no_ replacement pc dvdrom drive can read original discs...they can only read/play backups
i believe the liteon works well too, but if u got a dvd drive in ur pc?, why not give that a try!...just set it to slave and plug it in, i don't think u can harm anything if it's not compatible?...

Cool007 Oct 19, 2002, 12:16 PM Is 106 the model number for pioneer?
Norr Oct 19, 2002, 02:32 PM I just bought a Pioneer to change over. Its a DVD-117 the pc board on the drive looks identical to the 500M. Just the adaptor board for the yellow plug to make up and I'm off!
Cost £40 here in UK.

rumblebumble Oct 21, 2002, 12:45 PM Yes i've tried it with every jumper setting.Same message+eject button flashes red and green.Somebody else must have had the same problem!
Don't want to buy another drive unless i have to :(
marvelguy68 Oct 21, 2002, 02:16 PM make sure ur doing it correctly, with the original still hooked up. also, u need an original xbox disc, in the original xbox dvd drive. one of those freebgies from the xbox mag works well.
NaughtyLondonBoy Oct 21, 2002, 05:56 PM wow, i only came on to see how i can boot up mp3s and other interesting stuff for my xbox and here im reading about peopl wanting to change their dvd drive! wow
So if i get one of these dvdrom drives, would it replace the original? wouldnt it look odd?
i know im thick...sorry
hof Oct 21, 2002, 07:28 PM It is possible to replace the drive but easier just to add another while leaving the official one in. I just added one to mine tonight and it boots up all the discs I've been having problems with. I just connected the data cable that goes to the original DVD drive and used a power splitter on the power cable for the hard-drive. The drive is a Relisys 16x.
What's this about having an original in the XBOX drive? Mine works fine without one.
Norr Oct 22, 2002, 06:26 AM Mine needs the original to boot the backups in the secondary DVD player!
Are you still running the MS dashboard?
The original drive is a Thomsans.
NaughtyLondonBoy Oct 22, 2002, 04:41 PM all i have is an executor chip in my xbox. how easy is it for me to add another drive? would it just sit externally then??
i need to whack a new HD in too.

No, I'm using Evox. As an update though I've taken out the additional drive cos it seems to be just as picky as the original one but with different discs. I'll have to buy a different one :(
