View Full Version : What is the Best CD Copying Program?

VLC
Feb 04, 2002, 06:45 PM
As in for backing up your game cd's...

I ask this as my program, WinonCD, isnt to good on doing this.

I'm looking for a downloadable program that can backup any pc-cd with reliability, by overcoming copy-protections etc.
For Backup only.!

An as we're on the subject, whats the best CDRW drive to go with the above sw.

so whats your recommendation?

cheers all.

CloneCD (http://www.elaborate-bytes.com) will copy most CDs but it depends on your burners capabilities. Check the hardware requirements @ the clone site.

I agree with Darkman, Clone *is* the best bar none so long as your writer is supported by it.

But if you want the same sort of copying prog for audio I would highly rec Feurio.

If you have an upto date burner (ie lite-on 24x or plex 24x) then cd-mate is one of the best in my opinion. Very similar to clone....

MY WORD - that reads pretty comprehensive!

but what does 'rest of psx' cover?

an does this mean that some s/w handels certain formats better than others?

this was a suspicion of mine - though clone-cd sounds most popular here.

[so far...]

If your burner is full clone cd compatible then clone will be the best program for you. 'Other psx games' would include the non copy protected ones, though you can still clone these too, the fact that they are not copy protected makes no difference. CDRwin will allow you to patch games with various trainers and cheats etc, and you can patch around protection if need be, have a look here (www.megagames.com) .

Sure thing to all of the above, but i wondered then, what is the best 'make' of CDR DRIVE, like say by Sony or Phillips, as they invented the CD i heard, so maybe theyre the best makers of CD backuppers ???? [huh]?

I don't think just because sony and philips makin the "great" Cd makin them
THE best of cd-r's..I mean sure they're great with DVD stuff and what not, but
With my own HP cdwr i can manage to do stuff that, even burn the mod
cd's to your fav games such as Darkest Day for Baldur's gate with EASE, still
ranks as one of the best with the exception of Dell...(duhh)
Basically I'd use Clone CD for dc games
Roxio with psx games, whether preotected or not and then some..or
cdrwin for all you old and new school gamers of ps..so no bullcrap when it
comes to biz gentlemen, let's make ends meet!

When I burn I only use 3 soft's - depending what I want done

(1) CloneCD, far the best 4 all PSX burns (besides it's the only 1 I got 2 work properly lol)

(2) EZ CD Creator 5 Plat, which I use for Audio, VCD, Data etc.

(3) Nero 5.5, I use this 2 burn Divx flicks as U can drag & burn & for back up if the above fails anytime

an is he saying that a dell cdrw is best overall.
an who are 'old and new school gamers of ps.'
an what does this mean - 'so no bullcrap when it comes to biz gentlemen, let's make ends meet!'

confused here.

You can even get CDRW drives let alone CDR. I think that Sony is the best make, as I have had no problems with it. Make sure you get the CDRW drive that has buffer underrun protection because the next thing you would want is a cdr to buger up.

You can also get DVD/DVDRW drives for 400, the best make for t is Pioneer and it comes with a buffer underrun protection.

I wondered if any of u guys could help.

I have a mate that wants to download the latest software for his TraxData CDRW drive, the TraxData website is shite so if u guys have any ideas please help.

And the best burner is the pioneer a03. You can burn everything with it!

Well i recently downloaded that clonecd prog an must say its GUI is damn small!

An it doesnt lend itself to high visibility when coordinating files between 2 cdroms, unlike my old winoncd 3.6. I was disaponited about this as i expected much more 'ease-of-use' considering its reputation here. Or maybe its true quality lies in its copy abilty only...?

Also, my Mitsumi drive is 2yrs old, an so wondered how long cd-drives last before they need replacing with a more capable model....?

What are you comparing it to then? This only means it's the best make you've had.

Also, my Mitsumi drive is 2yrs old, an so wondered how long cd-driv

Simple answer: as often as you feel the need to upgrade or as often as you drive neeeds replacing!

Technical answer:
2X drives take about 40 minutes to burn a CD
4X drives take about 20 minutes
8X drives take about 10
16X take about 6
24X take about 4.5
32X take about 4
40X take about 3.5

Then you have to factor in time to prepare the compilation especially if you do one-of data backups like i do, whcih can take a significant amount of time. If you do a lot of staright copying OTOH then burning time becomes the deciding factor.

You then decide what is a pertinent upgrade!

Drives usually last anywhere between 500 and 4000 burns from what I've seen posted here and on other sites. When I make a backup for someobne Actual end cost of backups always tend to run on the order of cost of media times 2 (plus time).

HTH...

Good answer 83bj60. And as they say time is money, so we all have different viewpoints. As you stated "You then decide what is a pertinent upgrade!"

Yeh i know what you mean, but i was hinting at the techincal advancement machines go thru over the years, not their performance etc.
for eg- i last bought a VCR because it had NICAM, but NOT because it rewound tapes quicker or my previous one broke-down.
Therefore i was wondering about whether newer cd-drives had any innovations that overcome currrent problems, like someone here earlier said - 'Make sure you get the CDRW drive that has buffer underrun protection', - now thats the kinda thing i got curious about after reading what that guy said.:)

Boy, I am tired. i just realized I was answering a post on page 1 of this thread... :o

So as for the all-around best burner at present, I'd say the LiteON 40125S is the king of the heap, but quite a few will do just fine as well.

The LiteON does it all, even, to some extent, Cactus protected audio from what I've read (don't have one to test it with).

VLC, I had a Plextor 1210A prior to the LiteON and right off the bat I can tell you after C1 level error testing that it performs better than my old Plextor did even though it's supposed to be of better 'quality' than the LiteON. So I'd say yes, the technology gets better as time goes. I remember my old HP burner that died after a few hundred CDs, was very finicky with media (that's how I discovered Kodak Golds and Mitsui Golds were the most reliable media out there at the time) and cost over $600 when new. Now can't even get a CD burner for that price, but a complete computer with CD burner!

CDClone & Easy for Me...

Badidoh
Apr 10, 2002, 01:41 PM
AHEAD NERO 5.5.8.0, I'm using that

Trust me on what I say

Nero can do almost everything, from hybrid cds, to bootable cd's

Wow, it's really comparable to Roxio's & Adaptec's Easy CD Creator Program.

Really similar, but Nero is more advance. So go with Nero.

But if you're just copying cd's straight, I suggest either DiscJuggler or CloneCD.

If you're gonna extract sectors or wanna modify some stuff on a cd, CDRWin is great. You can only do so much with CDRWin.

Those are the best programs, trust me, I've used almost every burning program out there.

Kind of depends on what you would like to copy...

I recommend NERO, reliable, stable and simple, however loaded with many options if you want them.

If you want to make EXACT copies of cd's uyou might find some cd's are not that easy to copy, because of some kind of copy-security. In that case you might want to try CloneCD. This is an amazingly small, though powerfull program that will copy EVERYTHING on the cd, including "pretended errors" at some points on the original cd (these are very common as a cpoy protection, while most programs hang up on these, thinking they really are errors) CloneCD is a quality piece of software that will enable you to copy almost everything.

I thought i'd revive this old thread of mine with a neat offer, as ive just uploaded the aforementioned 'clony' prog to my site @ http://popdown.port5.com/ - but i am asking here if members can suggest other useful progs for cd-rw copying, so others may know where to get them also :)

- an if their not too big for the webspace i still got left, i will upload them also :(

The clone CD website is having some legal issues at the moment, is there a backup site for the ultimate cd backup program on the net???

it is only like 3 something MB, so it can be easily FTPed using something like say...aim? i have mIRC, so will look there too for somebody with the .exe install. i always save these for a rainey day, hope others doe too...
