system setup:
ide 1 master ibm 76gb hdd
ide 1 slave liteon ltd dvd 163
ide 2 master liteon 24x cdr/rw
amd 1800xp
256mb ddr2100
via kt266a chipset with latest 4 in 1 driver
win 98se
dma enabled on both reader & writer and working according to cd-speed results (cpu utilization very low)
nero 5.5 bundled with writer

problem:
when i try and create an audio cd from mp3 files on a cd from my ltd 163, the drives response is very slow.
when i drag the files across the conversion time takes about 3 mins and the ltd 163 will not spin up very fast at all.
if i drag the files across from my hard drive it converts them in seconds.
i have tried some older software (easy cd 4 and nero 5) and there is no problem but my writer is not supported.
i have tried the drive speed utility and auto detected speed (20x for audio which is ok) but there is no value in the spin up box and this is greyed out.

any help appreciated as i am building this system for a mate and it is doing my head in.

To burn on the fly like this your DAE speed needs to be about double the write speed. So with a DAE of 20x I would suspect the 'normal' write speed you'll get will be around 10x.

The results you are getting may not be flash but they aren't unexpected.

darkman,
thanks but you have not grasped my problem
burning is not the problem.
it is the conversion rate of the mp3 to cda track before you get the burn option.(when you drag the tracks across it takes ages)
i copy with the liteon dvd at 16x on the fly on my own system no problem and if i do a disc to disc on the new system there is no problem.

i have solved the problem.

i diwnloaded the latest version of nero 5.5.7.2 and upgraded from 5.5.3? and it worked straight away.
now burning at 24x on the fly.

thanks to all those who looked in

Sorry spoondog, I didn't quite get your question, also I wasn't ignoring you, it's just a time zone thing. Hey even the DM has to sleep sometime :D .

I'm glad you got it sorted.

It's the thing you do when you run out of caffeine.
