I have an HP cd-writer + 8290 USB burner rated at 4X write speed. I've been using Nero 5.5.5.1 for a while and everything works fine, the burner is supported and writes at full rated speed without errors. Today I updated to Nero 5.5.7.2 and now the burner is shown as having a Max. write speed of 1X. If I try to copy a CD the only selectable choice is 1X. HELP!!!

as the old saying goes if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Occasionally new versions of Nero are buggy. Uninstall it and go back to the version that was working for you. You can always try again when the next update to Nero is eleased.

Thanks DM...I have reverted back and all is well. I should have known better then to update when everything was working fine. Thank God for Ghost.

Generally anything less than a full point release is either a bug fix or adding support for new burners. if 5.5.5.1 is working for you then 5.5.7.2 probably won't give you any improvements.
