ok - dont want to sound like a complete twat -ive been using windows for about 6 years...and XP pro since the summer, and ive always assumed they removed the my computer icon and put in in the strt bar, my compuer (to my annoyance!) but whilst doing some syuff i noticed that on the drop down windows (where you type the www url in an expoloer window) and choose desktop so it appeasr as a window, low and behold all the icons tht ARE on my desktop appear in ther and a 'My computer' icon...yet when im seeing the desktop properly - there aint one there - sure i can put a shortcut on there - but the sytem is telling me theres one there yet i cannot see i on the dektop...wht the hells this all about?!??!?

Were you skateboarding whilst you typed that??

Anyway, if I get you right:

Right click on the Taskbar and select Properties

Click the Start Menu Tab at the top

Check the Classic Start Menu Tab and all your desktopicons should return.

Is that what you meant??

Get all the regular icons like My computer, My Documents, My Network Places and Internet Explorer on the desktop:

Right click the Desktop, Properties, Desktop Tab, Click on Customize Desktop button and check off the four icons.

Do you know anything about how Windows XP\2000 works? There's nothing really wierd about what you're seeing...
There's the Default user profile, the "All user" profile, several User profiles, and the Current user profile. All the profiles have a "Desktop" directory and settings. Which one are you looking at?
