View Full Version : Does Putting A Label On Game Disk Unbalance It At All

DARRENNO6 Oct 27, 2002, 08:12 PM JUST wondering is it safe to put cd labels on the dvdr`s or will this unbalance the disk as it does with films darrenno6:confused:   QWERTY Oct 27, 2002, 08:38 PM Only if you put it on crooked. brandonbooth Oct 28, 2002, 12:44 AM Labels shouldn't affect any type of disc, unless you realls screw up when you put it in, and it has a PS2-style CD/DVD tray. brianc Oct 28, 2002, 07:41 AM I know this is not related to the XBox, but..... I had a DVD-R copy of Spiderman when it first came out, supplied with a nice CD label. Half through the film it would jump and/or freeze. On removing the disk it was quite warm. I decided on advice to remove the label and........it played prefect. It seemed as the disk was heated up the label was distorting the CD slightly and effecting the play back from the player. I don't know how hot XBox disks get. But now on DVD backups I never put a label on the disk. No choice is it between a NICE LOOKING CD you never see in the XBox or DVD player.......OR....a disk that plays prefect. Cal_G_UK Oct 28, 2002, 11:05 AM They affect DVD disks a lot worse than CD's, this is a proven fact, if they are slightly off they cause stuttering and even crashes, it may be something to do with the way a DVD is the same size as a CD but stores over 6x the ammount, the information must be a lot more compact or something, pop into the BSTS forum and ask a few of the traders there who sell DVD movies about the returns they have had with DVD's with labels. There are more than you might think. Remove the label and the DVD works perfect. Printing directly to the disk works perfectly well if you have 1 of them very expensive printers! Peace Cal_G QWERTY Oct 28, 2002, 11:07 AM A proven fact implies that everyone agree's and can't be argued against. I don't agree. I've got almost a hunded or so DVD-R movies, with labels. All work. And so does my X-Box, Playstation, Dreamcast, Saturn, VCD and Sega-CD collection. My experience doesn't fit the so called "facts". And there are plenty of people that agree with me, otherwise no one would waste their time creating websites with labels and covers. Like anything in this world, do it right the first time and you won't have a problem. brianc Oct 29, 2002, 04:10 AM Agree with the above comment about sites offering CD labels. My point was not the fact the label was applied incorrectly. But the fact my DVD ran quite hot. As QWERTY points out, I'm sure in another better player it would play no probs with a label. I'm making the point that a labelled CD is more effected by an increase in temp than an unlabelled one, so to be on the safe side I leave them off. VOC_Northern Oct 29, 2002, 01:56 PM Qwerty you are wrong....even the amount of ink put onto a label can effect a dvd-r....of course a label upsets a dvd-r...it is not balanced so it will vibrate... MISKIN Oct 29, 2002, 02:30 PM i put labels on some of my backups and the ones with labels on took longer to load and sometime didnt load at all.... so i removed the labels in warm water and they boot up fine. :) DARRENNO6 Oct 29, 2002, 04:51 PM so what`s the answer for xbox as i wasn`t asking about the effect on films as i already have my own view on that regards darrenn06 virus2 Oct 29, 2002, 08:33 PM NO IT DOES NOT http://www.imagemagician.com/images/master99/VISUS2.gif allan-mac Oct 29, 2002, 09:46 PM i labeled 60 working xbox games, afterwards 24 would not work had to remove the labels with warm water, took me hours.. i would never label a dvd again allan biglen Oct 29, 2002, 10:25 PM i have had bad luck with labels on my xbox dvdr's.some games would stop loading and when i took the label off,it booted fine.i guess it depends on your xbox. Sam_41 Oct 30, 2002, 03:00 AM Used to put covers on my xbox dvd-r as it looks so much better. However, they all (about 90%) of them decided to stop working. I have many games without labels and they are all fine. I really do like the professionalism with the covers on, but for me it just ain worth it. Maybe they will be fine for you, try a couple out and leave them for a month or so and keep playing em. Dont know why it does this for my xbox, as dvd-r films are great with covers on... sol Jan 02, 2003, 05:41 PM I stuck labels on my XBox DVDRs and they refused to work properly. Loading times are extended, crashes occur and games hang when loading levels. I have now removed some of the labels and they now work fine. Baturkin17 Jan 02, 2003, 08:06 PM blockbuster games that have the security stickers on them make it unbalenced. my xbox was vibrating like a mo-fo. i turned it off and it was still vibrating as the disk slowed down. DRuNKhNMuNKy Jan 03, 2003, 01:24 AM Someone stated something about the ink. This is probably a dumb question, but writing witha permanent marker on a dvd-r can't affect it right? Intermission Jan 03, 2003, 04:07 AM Blockbusters are not supposed to put the stickers on the cd's anymore head office stopped that a few years back (to many complaints i guess) i do know this for fact as i used to work for them :( (bad times) dexterm99 Jan 03, 2003, 05:42 AM Maybe it's the type of labels being used and it's applicator and also the shape of the disk. I've found that some disks are slightly imperfect and not 100% round. These usually make loud buzzing noises in cdrom and dvdrom drives. This then affects the label when it's applied. I've found the CD Stomper to be the best applicator out there as it's sturdier than the rest. brooza Jan 03, 2003, 05:57 PM I heard that the glue in the labels eats through the disc and stops it working :) . I panicked and lost most of my DreamCast backups by trying to scrape off the labels and taking the rest of the disc with it :( Jaymus Jan 03, 2003, 05:59 PM lol, you dont scratch them off........soak it in warm soapy water until the glue dissolves then it should easily peel off if you soak it long enough. careful not to peel the reflective surface off. brooza Jan 03, 2003, 06:00 PM i know that now...ill do that with my surviving ones sirdrinkalot Jan 03, 2003, 06:24 PM i have labels on a lot of mine and they work fine, however one recently stopped working and i didn't know why, after reading this thread i removed the label and it is again working fine. neo-playstation Jan 04, 2003, 06:38 AM Its not really the unbalance, but the fact that as the CD heats up, it distorts the disc. Pro. stuff like cd stompers do this less frequently. I have bad experience from this. twechar Jan 05, 2003, 06:21 AM I think it's a lot to do with the dvd drive you have, I have an xbox with a philips dvd drive in it that is rubbish, it won't play dvdrs with labels on it won't play cheap dvdrs it's just a very poor dvd drive, jimbo zoob911 Jan 05, 2003, 08:03 PM Just to be safe, I use full color labels for the actual DVD or CD case, but leave the disc blank. As long as you can tell which disc is which, why bother risking making them unreadable. Ian997 Jan 05, 2003, 08:30 PM i have to agree with zoob911, why bother with a cd label ? And what would happen if one came off inside an x-box dvd drive ? Kingsh2000 Jan 06, 2003, 12:13 AM I use cd hub labels on all my games and have not had any problems with any of them. pedroukuk Jan 08, 2003, 11:34 AM Better with no labels........ the cheaper the medium the more probs you''l get. |
