DC Fisherman Oct 28, 2002, 12:30 PM dell dimension 4500, P4 2.4 GHz, 512 ddr ram, GF4 ti4200 64 mb, win XP. is that enough information to determind the problem? rugby_fan_1999 Oct 28, 2002, 03:11 PM Sounds like you might have a few programs running in the background maybe? Shut down any unneeded programs and try again. Virus checkers are often a cause of slowdowns. Nice machine... wish mine was as fast as yours. :) DC Fisherman Oct 28, 2002, 07:35 PM i have like 40 to 50 programs running on the background, but i don't know which programs are useful. and my anti virus program is running in the background too. how do i find out which program are not useful and how do i disable them from running. psibob84 Oct 28, 2002, 07:53 PM i usually go for the try and hope method. at worst you will have to reboot ur pc DC Fisherman Oct 29, 2002, 04:04 AM is there any better ways to test? i don't want to mess up my computer. Indiana Jones Oct 29, 2002, 02:56 PM You should be able to shut down everything apart from Explorer and Systray, leave them alone or the system will crash, hope this helps. dcm386 Oct 29, 2002, 07:05 PM Originally posted by Indiana Jones You should be able to shut down everything apart from Explorer and Systray, leave them alone or the system will crash, hope this helps. Thats not how it works on XP :( Indiana Jones Oct 29, 2002, 07:23 PM Oh, didnt know you had XP sorry, ive just got good old Win 98 hehe DC Fisherman Oct 29, 2002, 07:34 PM then how do i do it on XP? cause there are a lot of programs running. QWERTY Oct 30, 2002, 11:50 AM Control-Alt-Delete to bring up the task manager, and shut down the non-essential task. Or Run MSCONFIG and stop the unneeded tasks from running at startup. Either way I don't think the problem will completely go away. You're experiencing network lag and it has little to do with the performance of your computer. I have the same occasional problem with Battlefield and so does everyone else who plays that game. 754boy Oct 30, 2002, 12:38 PM Damn....40 or 50 programs running. I have XP Pro and I usually have only 10 or 12 programs running in the background. Getting rid of some of those should help you out nicely. DC Fisherman Oct 30, 2002, 03:46 PM QWERTY: i closed some programs that i thought they were not useful using MSCONFIG, but there are still many programs that are running in the background when i bring up the tasks manager. i am not going to mess with those because i might mess up my computer by doing that. DC Fisherman Oct 30, 2002, 03:49 PM 754boy: now i have about 30 programs running and it does help. but there are still some programs from Dell are running. QWERTY Oct 30, 2002, 11:19 PM Actually, having 30 process running is about average for most people running Windows XP. If you look at the CPU usage, most of the processes are sitting idle and therefore not affecting system performance. The more memory you have, the more processes are pre-cached into memory in order to enhance performance since the system doesn't need to access the harddrive. Like I said, I doubt your framerate performance problem has much to do with your system. Battlefield is a network hog and your framerate is dropping because the network is experiencing some lag. There's only so much you can do from your end. DC Fisherman Oct 31, 2002, 03:09 PM QWERTY: i don't play the game online, so i don't think it's the problem with the network. rugby_fan_1999 Nov 01, 2002, 08:29 PM Does Ctrl-Alt-Del in win-xp give you the option to close processes? if it does, then try closing ones you think are not necessary. you will not harm your computer if things stop working right... they will all start up again next time you reboot (this is right i think???). Also if you are not sure about what a process is, do a google search for it... there will be lots of sites telling you what is safe to end, and what must be left running. jaguarsin2001 Nov 05, 2002, 12:31 PM Have you checked your drivers for your graphics card? DC Fisherman Nov 05, 2002, 10:05 PM no, where can i download the driver? celtic_druid Nov 05, 2002, 11:09 PM Latest version is 41.03 although latest is not always greatest. ftp://download.nvidia.com/Windows/ As I understand it though if you upgrade to 40.xx drivers then you need to remove some older incompatible files or there may be issues. DC Fisherman Nov 06, 2002, 12:54 AM i have to remove old files? also, i can't access to the ftp site. the_oracle_uk Nov 06, 2002, 07:18 AM have u tried applying any patches that there are out for battlefield 1942? celtic_druid Nov 06, 2002, 10:32 AM There is a tool here: http://www.guru3d.com/files/ for removing the files. Also the ftp site works fine, what program are you using?? gamehunter Nov 07, 2002, 06:11 AM I just installed bf 1942 last night and the framerates are puke!!! I have a pent 4 1.6 ghz with a gforce 3 ti 200 with 768 megs of ram. I also knocked down the graphics settings and it didnt help. I am aware of a patch that is available for the game but haven't had a chance to download it yet. Ill give it a shot this afternoon after work. Gonna play around with it some more and maybe get lucky. As far as programs running in the background, not an issue. I shut down just about everything and the framerate remains the same. gamehunter Nov 07, 2002, 05:45 PM OK< installed the patch, didnt help with framerates. Here is the strange thing that happened. I dont understand it for the life of me, but I hope that maybe someone else may have the answer. I tried to play online, and bingo. Excellent framerates!!!!!!! Went back to single player against the computer and framerates were terrible again. Why the hell are the framerates fine online, but garbage against the computer? Anyone?????? DC Fisherman Nov 07, 2002, 08:28 PM i installed the patch but it didn't help, i think that patch is for the server fix or something like that. gamehunter, can u email me please? because i have something i need to ask u about the game. gamehunter Nov 08, 2002, 06:01 PM OK, here's the fix :) First off, I tried emailing you from the forum box at the top but I dont think it worked. If you still want to email me after this post, post your email. Here is the fix: First, lower you video settings. (has to be done on my 1.6ghz system with a gforce 3ti200 and 768 megs of ram) I run at medium. Now, the most important thing is this: SOUND QUALITY: It's set at 44 hz by default. (Way to high) Turn it down to 22 hz!!! Also make sure you channels are set in the 20's. This should do the trick for you. Let me know how you make out. DC Fisherman Nov 09, 2002, 01:57 AM i try to email back to u first but it didn't work. so u can email me to here: shwong3000@yahoo.com npras42 Nov 10, 2002, 09:46 AM okay.... based on what u said about ur PC, to close the right progs: first disable Norton AV Next press Ctrl-Shift-Esc u can diable everything except: iexplore.exe taskmgr.exe navapsvc.exe (this is norton but u cant get rid of it and it only takes 700Kb when it is disabled in the corner of the screen) devldr32.exe msbb.exe spoolsv.exe (printer i think but no point in gettin rid of it) explorer.exe ccEvtMgr.exe svchost.exe (all of em) lsass.exe winlogon.exe csrss.ese nvsvc32.exe (nvidia 40.xx graphics drivers) system system idle process these are pretty much all the things running on my PC, and BF1942 works very well on my PC wgich is reasonably similar to urs - AMD XP 2100+, 512MB PC133 Ram, GeForce 4 Ti4600 128MBDDR. I run the game at Medium detail for best results tho i can run it higher. gamehunter Nov 10, 2002, 11:05 AM Ive set up different profiles on my boot. I can run games at bare minimum. The best fps I can get out of this game is about 40-45 fps with everything down. Npras, I'm curious what your getting for fps with the settings you describe. Just in case you dont know the console command for checking the fps, it----- console.showfps 1 --------- I'd like to know what you consider running "very well" DC Fisherman Nov 12, 2002, 09:43 PM thanks npras42, now i am going to try running the game and see if anything is different. gamehunter: how do u check the the fps? like can u explain the whole process please? DC Fisherman Nov 12, 2002, 10:10 PM i close most of the processes down to 23, and it runs smoothly. gamehunter Nov 15, 2002, 06:24 AM To check the fps, go to the console by pressing the ~ key. Dont use the caps button. Put in the command in my previous post. DC Fisherman Nov 21, 2002, 09:45 PM round 40 to 50 fps in game if i disable the antivirus program. gamehunter Nov 22, 2002, 06:18 AM Very playable. DC Fisherman Nov 23, 2002, 03:57 PM yes, but the problem is i rarely turn on the computer and disable everything just for games. i will will have everything on before i play that game. |
