i wonder if anyone can help!!
Have just fit a Liteon 24x writer and liteon 163 dvd rom, now when burning with either nero or clone the buffers are all over the place and burning a full cd takes about 9 mins. When i refit my old 12x plextor everything is ok and burn speeds are back to normal !!!

Duron 900
Abit kt7a mobo
256mb

Surely this system should be capable of burning 24x ??

Any help appreciated (or they go out the window)

Cheers

1st off, don't throw them out the window, they are both good drives!
Are you burning audio cd's or data cd's like games? And are they protected? I assume you're burning them on the fly. That combo of drives can burn audio on the fly at 24x, but NOT data (not sure the max it can do this at). Obviously protected games will take longer to burn than unprotected ones.
Some things to check:
make sure you have DMA enabled on all your drives, make sure they're not on the same IDE channel (the source and destination shouldn't be on the same IDE channel when burning on the fly). Also, everytime the indicator light flashes yellow/orange, then the buffer-underrun protection is kicking in and this will increase your total burn time. If it constantly flashes during your burn, then try a slower burn speed.
There's nothing wrong with your system or the drives--just the settings and nature of what you're burning.

Thanks for the reply.

Have tried both audio and data with the drives in all configurations but always seem to burn slow. Youre right the orange light does go on & off even with audio. Plextor will still burn faster from the h/drive than the liteon? Using nero speed check the drive shows a speed of 16x, is this the best i can expect??
DMA is on on all drives.
When converting mp3 to cda in nero, this also takes much longer than with the plex in and read buffer takes almost 55sec to get to the stage where burner starts.
