So I have lost my poundsign, (shift and 3 is now a #) as above.
I have not gone through all my symbols, but my @ and " have crossed over, so shift and 2 is a " (if you see what I mean!)
Any advice will help!. Am I stuck with this for good?.

Change your country and keyboard from US to UK/english/british should solve your problem, these are found under the Control Panel.
