it's an old P2 or p3 400 or there abouts, it let's me close down, then about 20 mins later it decides to boot up on it's own.

this kind of freaked me out cos i was in on my own when it first done it and i thought i had a computer geek ghost in my house!!!

but seriously and ideas except from turn it off at the plug.

i have not installed anything recently except btopenworld and it's running on win2000 pro.

any help much appreciated to get rid of this little ghost!:zombie:

What are you cpu temps, also it could be a psu. What ratings are you'r psu and what do you have in your box?

mine was doing that the other week - it crashed and after i turned off it just started to come on again (as you say very freaky).
i just ran norton disk doctor and it cured it.

Verify the RAM. Take off the bank, clean with a vacuum cleaner the slot and the memory. Put it in the comp. Eventualy, verify the memory on anoter

id prolly agree its PSU or Wake On Lan... or some sorta timer thats been set since it happens every 20mins or so as you put it ... might be on hibernate or summat like that... i cant personally see it being the ram that would actually power it up but i guess checking everything cant be a bad thing. also mebbe worth doing a trojan or virus check.... www.moosoft.com seems to be a recommended trojan scanner. all the best with that

Check your BIOS settings. It's either the Wake ON Lan, Wake on Modem Ring, AC Power Loss Settings, Wake On Keyboard or Mouse, Wake on USB, Automatic Power up, or one of the other Wake or Power up settings that your BIOS may have.

Normally on the bootup screen, it tells you which key to press to enter the BIOS setup screen.

If not, try <Del>, <F2>, or 1 of the F keys.
