is you are talking about finding out without opening the case, no there is no way to tell. all u have to do is remove 6 screws from the bottom, and lift the cover off to expose the dvd drive, thats all there is to it.

open your dvd tray , if its a long oblong type tray its a thompson , if its more of a circle then its a philips

Ya, just eject they tray, if it's a perfect U, it's a thompson, if it's like a lightbulb, its a Phillips. Check this out

so which drives are best then ? philips or thompson ?

i have a thompson and it works nice with all types of dvdr :)
