If you already use outlook express for email then it's easy to configure it for reading newsgroups. If you want a non-micro$oft reader then Xnews (http://www.webattack.com/get/xnews.shtml) is a good freeware one. Quite simple to setup and the online help is all you need to get started.

The best is Agent! There is a free version, not quite as many features called Freeagent.I have had the registered version since 94.You pay once, all upgrades are free.It was just upgraded a couple of months ago. It also handles "y" encoding.

I like Neswsbin and i know a fair few people who use newsreactor. Outlook express will only let you read posts and you won't be able to download yENC stuff. HTH
