IceFX Nov 13, 2002, 07:23 PM How would one install win2k Pro on a computer that does not have a floppy drive. My friend only has a burner, cdrom, and zip drive. She changed the boot sequence to boot to CDROM, C, A ...but the computer doesnt boot off the CD. All that happens when the computer is booted up is just the computer looking to boot from a CD. I'm trying to find a way to get into command prompt or dos but I can't find any. Is there any way my friend can install win2k?????
Van Nugent Nov 13, 2002, 07:38 PM The Win2K CD you have doesn't have a boot record. I hope you have other bootable CDs such as Win98 or WinME???
None of my PCs have floppy drive either so I always have a bootable CD ready just in case (like flashing BIOS).
zedy Nov 14, 2002, 06:13 AM The Win2k cd she has must be a very bad copy then, the cd should be bootable, all later ones are.
Richskie Nov 14, 2002, 10:56 AM Yes all the os install cds have been bootable since Win98.
Is there already an os on this pc? If so you can install Win2k from windows by running the NTSETUP prog.
If not you will have to get a better copy or a floppy drive.
sickmanofasia Nov 14, 2002, 01:13 PM just make a bootable cd nero will it do it for you using a floppy bootdisk
Van Nugent Nov 14, 2002, 01:52 PM Well, even though Win98 (and later Windows) CD is bootable, there are still many home made's that are not. :)
Richskie Nov 15, 2002, 09:52 AM You can't boot from a Win9x floppy / cd & install Win2k / XP. The install prog runs in 32bit mode.
Van Nugent Nov 15, 2002, 02:22 PM Well, I'd used a Win98 bootdisk to install Win2K on many systems a couple of years ago because it's easier than using the Win2K 4-floppy bootdisks. In fact, you can boot from Win98/ME bootdisk to install even WinXP, too.
uk_trader Nov 15, 2002, 05:06 PM All you need to do is boot windows and put in the win 2000 cd and select fresh install.
You can let it remove the version of windows you already have or set up a dual boot. But you need another version of windose already installed.
And Rickishie is right win2000 cant be booted from dos.
Van Nugent Nov 15, 2002, 07:29 PM No one talked about booting Win2K from DOS. It was about whether you could install Win2K after booting from a Win9X/ME bootdisk.
thisiscoo Nov 15, 2002, 10:24 PM fack!!! why don't just installed a damn floppy drive in, lol :D it cost like 10 bucks for a single floppy disk drive.
and for now, even if you can boot up those windows 3.1 boot disk to install windows 2005 Professional deluxe fire version (special edtion)!!! He can't do that either becuz he doesn't has a floppy drive!!!
I guess since you have already own the original win2k pro cd then I can let you download my windows 2k pro cd, since my is bootable....... contact me if you want to download it from me....... phone_vo@hotmail.com
or just go to kazaa to download a backup version.......
Van Nugent Nov 15, 2002, 10:35 PM He doesn't need a floppy drive to boot up from a bootable CD to install Windows.
Do not offer anyone to download your Windows CD regardless of what you guess. Read The Rules (http://www.cdrom-guide.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=171)!!!

Correct me If Im wrong but isnt that what 9x and Me boot disks do boot DOS.
Richskie Nov 16, 2002, 08:58 AM Yup.
sickmanofasia Nov 16, 2002, 11:45 AM i agree with van on this one you can install all os off a standard boot floppy
because all you require is access to the cdrom then you would run winnt .
but since IceFX dosen,t have a floppy drive it doesnt matter anyway.this is why i suggested making a standard bootable cd.
Van Nugent Nov 16, 2002, 12:53 PM I agree with sickmanofasia, that's what he should do, a bootable CD that is.
I still have a Win2K CD with boot image made from Win98 bootdisk and that works perfectly fine. The reason I use Win98 boot image instead of Win2K boot image because that's for my old K6-2 system.
You can also use Win98/ME bootdisk to boot up & gain access to the CDROM then change to the folder \i386 to install XP, too, as I said above.
