Open up a command prompt and change to the directory with the file you want to delete. Do a ctrl-alt-delete, choose explorer.exe and end process. Go back to the command prompt from before and delete the file manually. Now go back to the windows task manager (ctrl-alt-delete if window is not still there). Click on File, new task (run), and type in explorer.exe. Winxp should then be back to normal and your file will be gone. Joe Bateman Nov 14, 2002, 07:53 AM thanks man i appreciate that, i will try it in a while. downloading atm so cant really close it down. thanks green_blade Nov 14, 2002, 08:45 AM I've had this problem before and just logging off and logging on again did the trick. moviedude25 Nov 14, 2002, 09:47 AM I have had the same problem mentioned before, unable to delete a file. What happened to me was that I had a movie that I tried to copy to my hard drive from a CD but it failed due to a nasty scratch on the disc. I then tried ISOBuster to rescue the file from the disc but again that failed. I choose to keep the file on my hard drive instead of removing it when it asked me. After that I rebooted many times and everytime and it always said the file was in use, even though I would have 0 programs running. Around the same time this happened I was trying out multiple programs for watching my movies. I had installed the DIVX Media Player and didn't like it and uninstalled it. The reason I found I was unable to remove this file was because it was looking for the DIVX program to open it which wasn't on my computer. When I went into the properties and changed the open to box to WMP I was immediately able to to delete it. I doubt this solution is the one for you but it helped me and maybe helps someone else :D memorxuk Nov 14, 2002, 11:20 AM Boot into safe mode, locate the file and delete. Joe Bateman Nov 14, 2002, 04:16 PM right ive got it sorted, i used cmd to browse my folders and deleted the file through there. thanks for the help guys merlin_the_magician Nov 15, 2002, 04:56 AM downloaded a divX file that will not delete..... let me guess.... it has an impossible long name stuffed with sexual terms doesn´t it? :D !!BUSTED!!You naughty boy! Anyway... the thing is not really that difficult. Go to your DOS prompt and locate the file, then delete it there. Probably you will need to rename it firste, in that case you will need to type over the entire name of the file using this command: ren [FULL FILE NAME] [new filename] <enter> del [new filename] <enter> there you go.... all gone...! |
