MalloPallo3 Nov 17, 2002, 07:04 PM I saw this posted and did not understand it:
Another way is to install another NIC (ethernet card) into your PC and create a small network between your computer and PS2 (you'll need crossover ethernet wire for this or if you connect the modem to a hub/modem if it doesn't have an uplink button).
Is there a way where I do not have to buy a hub or router and can just buy an ethernet card to connect my PS2/PC/Cable Modem all together? Thanks.
Bgnome Nov 17, 2002, 07:49 PM yes. this is what i do.
depending on what OS you use, you can set your pc up to share the internet connection among any computer connected to it, like a ps2.
you will need an open ethernet port to connect to your ps2 and a crossover, aka twisted pair, cat5 cable..
MalloPallo3 Nov 17, 2002, 11:16 PM So if I buy a cheap 10/100 card, and a crossover wire, I should be okay? Thanks.
MalloPallo3 Nov 18, 2002, 07:10 AM How much are those crossover wires?
Bgnome Nov 18, 2002, 07:46 AM you can make one if you have the right tools. otherwise, its about $5 for 10ft in many places.
Ephemeris Nov 19, 2002, 01:32 AM i got 10 feet for $2 at a computer show ^_^
MalloPallo3 Nov 19, 2002, 10:07 AM So I buy a network card, install it on my PC. Hook crossover wires from the PC to the cable modem, then run a cord, what kind of cord?, from my PC to my PS2 to the network adapter? This works just like a router, but cheaper I guess.
Bgnome Nov 19, 2002, 06:26 PM cable modem <-- regular wires --> pc <-- crossover --> ps2
MalloPallo3 Nov 19, 2002, 07:16 PM Thanks. I am just going to have to find a 30 foot crossover wire now since that is all I will need, thanks.
MalloPallo3 Nov 25, 2002, 02:33 PM Right now I have a Motorola cable modem hooked up to an ethernet card. What is the best way to hook up from here to my PS2? Thanks.
Bgnome Nov 25, 2002, 06:22 PM the "best" way is just to take the cable off the pc and hook your ps2 to your cable modem.
otherwise, you will need to buy something.
MalloPallo3 Nov 25, 2002, 11:35 PM If I bought nothing, I would just buy a long ethernet cable to hook from my PS2 to my cable modem.
If I bought something, I would need to buy a switch or router, not sure which one, correct? Thanks.
loneCoyo Nov 25, 2002, 11:39 PM router is what u need
switch doesnt do it unless your isp gives u more than 1 external ip
MalloPallo3 Nov 26, 2002, 05:36 PM I went out and got a RJ 45 cable to hook up my PS2 to my modem through my network adapter. When I go through the setup, it asks for manual or automatic, I choose automatic, give the username and password that I use for my email, and it does not detect my settings. If I choose manual to go through that process, I have no idea what to do! I called my ISP and they use something named dynamic ISP with only a Primary and Secondary DNS Address. When I enter that, I get invalid b/c the other 3 fields are empty. I am stuck with automatic I guess, what should I do?!? THanks.
Bgnome Nov 26, 2002, 06:20 PM dont use the password for your email unless you do a login thing for your IP
MalloPallo3 Nov 26, 2002, 07:14 PM Thanks for the info, it works now. I am a moron:)
Bgnome Nov 27, 2002, 08:47 AM congrats on the epiphany
MalloPallo3 Nov 27, 2002, 09:48 AM When I changed over ethernet cables, I had to unplug my modem for 15 seconds before I put in another cable and started up the PS2. Thanks again.
