i have a friend that has a compaq presario. one day it didn't turn on, so we took it to radioshack and they sent it to compaq. when it came back for some reason it had a (free) 24X Cd burner (that works fine), and the computer would come one. but now if you open anything to do with the internet, you get an illegal operation message and it closes down. you can connect to the 'net, but you can't even open the homepage, AOL IM, ICQ, kazaa, etc. does anyone why this would be happening?
Thanks in advance

It sounds like some or just one files have corrupted. Try re-installing Internet Explorer or upgrade to the latest one if you don't already have it.
What version of Windows do you have?

hey , well before going out and buying a new modem use the burner and backup important files than us the restore disks to reinstall windows. on some models there is a option to restore w/o formatting but that is not on all and sometimes does not work. compaq's are known for bad software and driver problems hope this helped

he used the quickrestore discs to start over fresh, everything works except now he doesn't get sound from anything, CD player, WMP, anything. and the problem is that his "PCI Audio Device" does not have the drivers installed. (Device status: The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28). To reinstall the drivers for this device, click reinstall Driver.) the thing is the drivers aren't on his PC and he doesn't have the setup disc for Windows 98 and we have no idea how to fix this. does anyone know how or what to do to fix this problem? today before we did the quickrestore, the sound worked perfectly.
Thanks in advance

They should be on the Compaq system disk.Failing that, check Compaqs website for the drivers. If all else fails,go to drivers.com
