when i'm on the net and i choose favorites my computer freezes and after about ten seconds turns itself of, this happens around 1 in 3 times. i'm using ie6 and o/s win xp pro.

there are a few possibilities it could be software (ie a conflict or program gone bad) or it could be hardware (ie ram processor or videocard) if it was me I'd reinstall the os if your problem persists then you know it is a hardware fault.

go to Start/Control panel/Administrative tools/Eventviewer and check the error logs for system and applications, it should tell you what is causing the error

Mine used to do this while opening Java applications.... uninstall your IE and Java and reinstall them then update via Windows Update website.... it seems to be a common error after installing XP Devils Own Pro edition
