dr jones Dec 02, 2002, 11:19 PM is there a way to manually select the speed on a CD-ROM drive? i'm trying to read a copied version of one of my games, and i notice that when the drive is at its top speed (based on the whirring of it), it'll read every time, but if it has slowed down, it's not able to read it and i can't load the CD ...
i may be asking out of my @$$, but i was just wondering if something like this exists ...
celtic_druid Dec 02, 2002, 11:50 PM Well if you are reading it with software then there would be a setting.. Otherwise you could use something like Nero DriveSpeed.
You might want to try reading the CD to an image and then burning another copy which hopefully should work more consistantly.
dr jones Dec 03, 2002, 02:58 AM ya, thats how i burned it ... im referring to BF1942 ... i used CD Mate on the Safedisc 2 setting, imaged it at 1x, burned it at 2x, so i think i got the best copy my burner can supply ... do u know of any other techniques i can use?
thanx ...
celtic_druid Dec 03, 2002, 03:53 AM Well I always read and write at max speed.. Never had a problem with a SafeDisc2 CD. Although twice I did have to read it slower to avoid picking up additional read errors.
So when you say ou can't read the CD, do you mean it doesn't pass the CD checks and the game won't load or that you actually can't read it?
dr jones Dec 03, 2002, 03:55 AM right, it will read it, but it wont pass the CD checks ... it only works when the CD is at high speed, it seems ... although that should be wrong right? at high speeds it would be more likely to have errors, so i dunno ...
ive been trying to use drivespeed but i dont think its working with my drive ...
celtic_druid Dec 03, 2002, 04:46 AM Might be easier just to use a cracked EXE.
dr jones Dec 03, 2002, 12:47 PM you know where i can find one that works? i've messed with them before, but all the ones i used wont allow u to do multiplayer ...
also, what about using an image as a seperate drive? i read about that somewhere, i can't remember where, but supposedly it would work ... i know they used CD Clone but other than that i'm lost ...
celtic_druid Dec 03, 2002, 02:35 PM You could use CloneCD's virtual drive, Alcohol or Daemon-tools to mount an image.
I know that at least previous versions (no idea about current) of Clone CD had trouble with BF1942, perhaps CD Mate also has problems... Try Alcohol as it may give you a better copy. Also once you have read an image it will list it and you can just double click it to mount it.
