Hi,

I have a Toshiba SD-R1002 DVD/CDRW drive, which has worked fine up until now!

It will no longer detect any original audio CD which I put in the drive!! Also, it will only read certain original software CD's which I put in!

For example, it wont read any original audio CD, and it wont read a 'system re-installation' CD (which came with my PC, but it will read the 'drivers' CD which came with my PC :-/

It will read a DVD which I have, it will burn a CD, and it will detect/read data CD's which I have burnt!

Oh, and it also detects and plays an audio CD which a friend burnt for me, which contains 2 of his own songs!!

I wasnt sure if this may have been something to do with the analog and digital paths which I have heard about, so I looked at the properties in the device manager, and 'Digital CD Playback' has been enabled, but it has also been greyed out!!

I wasnt sure if this may have caused a problem, if so, how can I un-grey it, so that I can dis-able it, to see if it is the cause?!?

I have played these audio CD's before, and this problem only arose a week ago! I havent had the PC open, so I havent disconnected anything! The only thing which I have done since it last detected an audio CD was install and unistall some software! I cant do a complete re-boot, because it wont read the CD :-/

Finally, the problem isnt that the CD doesnt play or that I cant hear anything.... the drive doesnt actually detect that there is a CD in!

Does anyone have any ideas why? and what can I do?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance!

Firstly, I apologise to the moderators for posting this message in more than one forum.... I am new to this forum, and have always seen that doen on other forums (I assumed it was the norm)........ Once again, sorry about that!!

One of the moderator's mentioned removing the DVD/CDRW drive from the device manager list and rebooting!!

I have attempted this, but the problem remains!

Thanks for the suggestion, but does anyone have any more ideas?

Sorry for the multiple posts and thanks for the assistance.

Have you tried cleaning the lens as I suggested if the removal is not successful?

What OS are you running?

I am running on Windows Millenium, and I have tried to clean the lens, however, the disc which I have is not detected by the drive!!

The instructions for the lens cleaning CD are audio, so that may be why... is it possible to buy a lens cleaning CD which is a data CD? Or would they all have audio on?

Any more suggestions?

Thanks for the help!!

Hi,

The drive (and PC) are about 16 months old!

Is it more than likely to be a hardware fault with the drive itself, rather than anything which I can change?

It looks like I'll have to get it changed :-(

Thanks for your help, and if anyone has anymore suggestions, feel free to let me know.

Thanks again!
